I just purchased a Chevy 2011 HD Ext. Cab with a 6.5 box. I would like to be able to haul my dozer on short locate jobs. The dozer (JD450J LT) weighs in at 16.8 k. What type of trailer and brakes would i need ? I do not want anything longer than 20 feet. Anyone have any real world experience ? Would this be totally unsafe or insane ? thanks in advance.

I've hauled that kind of weight but I have a 1 ton dually.
Your truck can handle it but not safely and certainly not legally. You would need a tandem dual gooseneck to handle that kind of weight. The trailer alone will weigh about 6k on the low side. That puts you at 23k total weight. Tongue weight would be around 4k, more than you rear tires can handle. You can shift more weight onto the trailer and be fine for short trips.
You mentioned business in your post, that opens up a whole new can of worms about legality.

X2.I have a 450D which weighs in at 14,000lbs,I'm guessing the new J's are probably at 16,000 lbs. by now give or take.[I don't know exactly if that's metric or you just didn't put in lbs. where you said 16.8 k].Yes,the new 2011's can haul much more weight than 2010's and back but with at least a 6K lb. trailer like pwdr extreme is correct on,you're now at least at 22K lbs. and let's not forget that is without the occasional 500-1000 lbs. of dirt/mud that will be on the dozer.Sounds like you have a SRW,so with a pintle type trailer, completely illegal and unsafe, with a gooseneck, still illegal, just a little less unsafe.I wouldn't risk it even for short moves.I've always been one who advocates ''It takes weight to pull weight AND to stop it.'' That's why I have a 7500.

I'm with all of the above. Will it physically pull it? Probably. Can you safely control and stop it? No. With that amount of weight the tail is going to wag the dog in every possible way. That's a recipe for disaster.
Possibilities aside, there's not a DOT officer or County-Mountie (or anything in between) who's not going to immediately pull you over and rake you over the coals - you'll have a bullseye on you everywhere you go.

Thank everyone. That's exact what I thought. Unsafe. The dozer is being used on dairy farms, mine and my father in laws. 10 mile trip one way... Private farm useage. We hire a local fellow to move it now and will probably just stick with that for the limited times we do actual move the machine..thanks again
