: low fuel light
jzh11 08-10-2005, 12:08 PM just curious...when does the little light by the fuel guage come on, i'm assuming its a low fuel light, but i've run my tank down till the needle was touching red and it never came on.
just wondering if mine's broken or it just comes on at the very last second.
so when does your light come on and how much fuel do you have left when it comes on?
thanks,
JzH
NFL DMAX 08-10-2005, 12:39 PM Mine comes on at different times....usually get 22-24 gallons back into the tank. I don't trust it.
habanero 08-10-2005, 01:12 PM I've only seen my on once, and I put something like 22 or so gallons in (short box-26 gallon tank). But a couple other times I have gotten down pretty low and put over 23 gallons in and haven't seen the light on. Thus I have to agree it is more or less worthless.
skoryaro2 08-10-2005, 01:14 PM Most people call it the "out of fuel" light
neo5556 08-10-2005, 01:19 PM I had my come on usually when DIC shows 40-60km left on tank
Timberwolf530 08-10-2005, 01:50 PM I was in a part of town I wasn't familiar with and couldn't find a station with diesel. My DIC said 35 mi left and the light came on. I put 24.67 gallons in, so it was pretty empty. I'm not going to let that happen again.
MrsSpoolin 08-10-2005, 02:42 PM I think the manual says 1.5 gallons is left. I try not to let the guage get below 1/4. We get ~ 400 miles to a tank, so I can judge there too. I don't drive the truck much, but I seem to fill it quite a bit. ;)
aketay 08-10-2005, 02:58 PM Mine has come on many times, ran out of fuel twice. Once the light comes on I can make it about 20 miles or less. Now I keep 5 gallons in the bed box.
wjjeeper 08-10-2005, 02:59 PM WOW-- waiting for the low light to come on.
I don't usually let my tank get below 3/8 just incase. I don't like the thought of possibly picking crap up that might be in my tank.
hazmat91180 08-10-2005, 03:22 PM I start sweating if I see that light especially if towing because the ranges vary so much. I have put in 25 gallons in once, and vowed never to do it again. Don't trust it. I would think the computer miles to empty would be a little more accurate at steady speeds, but even then.................
ACE21 08-10-2005, 03:54 PM The light in mine usually comes on when I have about 30 miles left.
xcman 08-10-2005, 04:15 PM I have ran out of fuel twice. Both in remote areas with no diesel in site. First time light was on for 15 miles. Second time the light never came on!!
Yeah, I think I just got fooled by the low fuel light. But then again, it could have something to do with my stupidity! Censored I can usually run about 30 miles or so when my light comes on and make it into the station fine. I figure with my commuting mileage of about 15-16 mpg I have burned about 24 gallons, that gives me a couple of gallons to go.
Anyway on Friday night, I coast into the station on fumes and run out before I get to the pump. It wouldn't restart and I had to have a couple of guys help push me to the pump.
Needless to say, this was a big pain in the ass, as I had to bleed and prime the damn thing several times to get it to fire. This can be a bit dangerous when your motor is hot, so be careful. Fuel sprays all over the place, so I would wear gloves and lay a rag over the filter housing.
It took a full 26 gallons, and I estimated that I had only driven about 15-20 miles when the light came on. Bottom line, don't always assume it comes on at the same point and that your driving habits/conditions were exactly the same so your mileage can be trusted.
Out!

I am also curious as to your thoughts on running your fuel level too low contributing to failed fuel pumps, etc??????? I have heard this was a problem on the gas motors, but havn't heard anything on diesels.
I had a pump go out on my 2000 5.3, but didn't make the connection until my dad recently mentioned it to me. I always run my fuel low, but usually not out!

It is my understanding that the fuel circulates from the tank in a loop with the injection system taking from the loop only as much as is required. However, the circulating fuel is used as a coolant to the system. So, very low fuel in tank means that what is circulating is warmer than if the tank were more full.
I try to never get below 1/4 tank. But there are a lot of things I try that I never fully succeed.):h
AZDMAX 08-28-2005, 10:53 PM Do I have a light :confuzeld If I do I've never seen it.
Redapple 08-29-2005, 01:02 AM My light has never come on. The only way I know its even there is when it lights up for a second when I turn on the ignition switch.

rcr1978 08-29-2005, 01:06 AM I know if the the light comes on and theres a hill coming up it's gonna be a bad day fuel must run away from the pickup area.
WileE1 08-29-2005, 02:01 PM On a trip last fall to Nevada, I was somewhere in the snow on the Oregon, Nevada border. The sign at the T in the road says Winamucka 239 miles right and Some other little town left ( I wanna go right toward winnamucka). It's sitting on the bar before the orange E. everyone is asleep, it's 3 am and I can see a light in the distance to the left. Executive descion (no not wake the wife up and ask her thoughts) take the left turn and head out being oh so gentle with the throttle, get to the light....two trailers on the eitherside no pumps.....I see another light in the distance.....here we go.....20 miles and BINGO light comes on......wake up the wife.....pass the next light... way off the road down a driveway..CRAP!
Now this is up the hills and down the hills throught the valleys.....keeping it a constant 50 miles an hour.....the needle is now not touching the orange bar and I swear the low fuel light was turning darker......I am praying now.....GOD if you can turn water to wine how about air into diesel......the next light we cam to had a huge sign Roaring Creek Ranch..hell if anyone in BFE has diesel it's a ranch...no doubt oput here by GOD himself........we pulled in I said a prayer for it to start in the morning and we went to sleep outside the shop.....we drove 65 miles with the Yellow light on.......in the moring after a few comical moments we went and talked to the Boss.....(you wouldn't have believed his place) he gave me 25 gallons of fuel ..wouldn't let me pay for it and told me to have a safe trip and watchout for his live stock.......
We left as the sun was peaking up over the mountains.....the ranch hands were pulling the Bell jetranger helicopter out of the garage.....it was pretty freaking cool!
I am a firm believer that GOD watches out over samll children and idiot...I know what catagorie I fit into ( my grandpas favorite saying).
