I've never raced my truck, and my buddy has challenged me in his 2005 1500 5.3L V8 4x4. We are both stock. Do I have a chance? Also when I take off do I hold the brake and get the RPM's up to about 2K and then just mash it to the floor at take off? What if I wanted to do a 4x4 launch. Is it done the same way?

It will be pretty close. Not sure who would win. Buy a small performance box and blow his doors off!

The 5.3L will win, but not by much.

A buddy of mine has a 2k Dodge 0ffroad 4x4 w/360. I used to race him with my 2k Chevy Z-71 w/5.3, they were dead even until I hit 3k rpm's then I would blow him away. I could get a solid 6-7 car lengths by 70mph. I've also run him with my new all stock D/A. He stays right with me off the line (because a haven't done a 4wd launch), as soon as it stops spinning I SLOWLY pull on him, maybe 1 1/2 car lengths to 70. If you want to race a 5.3 in stock form you will get beat. You might have a chance with a pre 2k model they had 270hp, in 2k they up'd them to 285hp, the new ones are 295hp.

BTW, when I raced him I spooled the turbo to 1500rpm's, which yelded tire spin through all of low gear. You might try a lower rpm or a 4wd launch.

I would think a Dmax would beat the 5.3 stock for stock. The 5.3 and 4L60-E are HUGELY handicapped by "Torque managment". I cant even spin the tires with all the powerbraking in the world on my dad's '03 Tahoe. Its a slug until about 5-8 mph, then gets it together and takes off...without torque managment the 5.3's would be much quicker IMO.

It will be close, but I think you will win. I beat a couple of them with my tacoma when it was stock, and I think my dmax is a bit faster than my tacoma was stock. Do a few practice launches to learn how to limit spin. Good luck.

My truck is stock and I have done the launch thing from 2wd. I've had the RPM's as high as 2K and my tires do not spin at all. I'm thinking something may be wrong with my truck. I also got beat by a 2004.5 Dodge CTD. My truck gets good fuel milage though. I have 285 AT's on it.

I would think your Dmax would take him.
I also have a 02 Yukon 5.3 IMO is gutless I have never put it to against my Dmax though.
Seat of pants o meter I think the Max is faster.

Tamale, I think it's the bigger tires making the difference on your truck. A friend of mine has an '05 D/A that would spin through low on a boosted lauch like mine. He went with 285's and his will no longer spin the tires. The taller ratio has killed some of the power. Interesting about your mileage, his went down with the bigger tires.

I'm begining to wonder if my 5.3 was an exceptional running truck, because a stock Dmax was no contest in a race......Towing was a whole 'nuther story, the 5.3 has NO torque, it's all RPM power.:D

If you launch him in 4 wheel and spool it up good you might get him in a ¼ mile. If you do a 2wd launch I think he will beat for sure. I belive the 5.3 is up around 300 hp now and they pull hard above 30 mph but off the line they still don’t have the torque.

I just dusted a 5.3 Z-71 w/duals about 15 minutes ago with my HT on level 3 !! Not a side by side take off ...........more like a he was going 40 and nailed it when he heard me take off...........I was pulling out and nailed it as he was passing and I had him by 2 lengths when I hit 60 mph !! Now in his defense.......his probably only dropped down into second........and I was coming up through the gears............but he had a lot of speed on me for me to catch up !
Kid was embarrassed big time and fell back into the rearview untill I pulled off !! I loved it !!

Stock for stock I thank it will be close if he has a cc Z71...When my gasser was stock I ran a 15.24@88 mph in the 1/4 mile and had a 2.2 60'..Now im down to 14.0 just with bolt on's and DR's..
