: 40' Race Car Trailer Too Much?
tmacracin 12-31-2010, 01:34 PM I'm looking to get a new enclosed race car trailer. I found a 40' gooseneck (triple axle, brakes on 3)I like but I'm worried it might be too much trailer for my 2009 2500,cc,sb ? The trailer weights 7000 lbs empty and will be 10 500-10 800 lbs with my race car and gear in it. I know I'll be under on the max weight but I'm more worried about the overall size of the trailer on a windy day, cross winds, passing semi, ect, ect. I've pulled the same style of trailer in 36' and it handles it great but a 40' seems a lot bigger. It's not tall like some of the huge RV's I've see guys with 3/4 tons towing but I want to be sure.
crf250x 12-31-2010, 02:06 PM What about some sway bars? I used them on my TT when I had a half-ton and they're supposed to work great for lateral movement. Just a suggestion.
Premis 12-31-2010, 02:45 PM Can't use sway bars on a GN and you don't need them.
The truck will handle it fine, you don't need to worry about winds unless we are talking in excess of 60-70 mph winds.
I logged about 80K miles pulling this 44ft gooseneck, it scaled out at about 17,000 loaded. Never had a problem pulling or handling it. You may want to recheck the weights on that trailer, assuming it's not living quarters, I bet it's closer to 11K unloaded.

It's more about whether you feel comfortable pulling it. If you don't feel comfortable, don't pull it. But the truck can handle it. Invest in air bags and one of these

7000 lbs. seems right for a 40'. I'm currently looking for a 48-52' GN w/LQ for my race car. They are all listed around 8000-9000 lbs. dry.
Your truck should be fine. You'll know after the first time you pull it though! It really depends on if your ok with it. Personally, I would get a dually, but that's just me.
tmacracin 12-31-2010, 03:09 PM I put air bags in already and the trailer has that 9" offset coupler for the short box. The tag on the trailer says 7000lbs empty. It's all aluminum so I would think that's right, there is nothing inside other than a closet and L shaped cabinets.
PrivatePilot 12-31-2010, 03:18 PM It should be fine, GN/5ths are inherently super stable trailers. As for being legal on your axle weights etc, well, that depends on what you put in it, but from a stability standpoint it's not gonna be an issue unless you load it to the point where the rear end of the truck is riding on the stops or something.
Don't let the weight police see this thread though. ;)

The MOST I will ever have in the trailer is 4000lbs. 2500lbs of that will be directly over the triple axles of the trailer so I should be good. My tires on the truck are Mickey Thompson ATZ's and have a load rating of 3200 lbs.
Pwdr Extreme 01-01-2011, 05:00 PM You'll be fine and within all limits. What brand is the trailer?
I keep thinking I need to replace my 30' bumper pull v-nose trailer with a nice enclosed gooseneck.
I only bought the bumper pull so I could pull it behind my motorhome, then a few years later I replaced my motorhome with a 5th wheel. I wish I could make up my mind

GN with living quarters. You already have the truck.....
I had a gasser motorhome, then I sold it with the plan of buying a diesel pusher to pull my enclosed, and then thought........WTF........I already have the truck, why not just buy a 48'+ GN trailer with LQ and be done with it. That's my plan anyways!
crf250x 01-01-2011, 06:10 PM I should have read the post before replying. Of course you can't out sway bars on a gooseneck.

I'm looking at a ATC and Optima. I have DSP adjustable gooseneck hitch but was thinking of selling it for a Superglide self moving hitch then that way I wouldn't have to run a 9" offset due to the short box trailer to cab clearance problems.
ryanryan 01-02-2011, 03:00 AM ^^^ATC's a VERY nice trailers. I highly recommend them.
loboboyatv 01-02-2011, 10:01 PM if anyone is interested i have a 9" offset for a 4" square tube gooseneck that i dont need. sell it half of new and it was only used 4 times plus shipping. let me know.
PrivatePilot 01-02-2011, 10:04 PM Post it in the marketplace, please - this is not the place for buying/selling.
