Hey guys, first off i would like to say im sorry for another injetor thread. Im am new to the diesel community as of about 3 weeks ago when i bought my 02 D/A 4x4 Reg Cab, Long Box w/60k. I have been reading the board for about a month now and be doing a lot of searching on the injector topic. But with so many threads about it, its hard to find the answers to my questions. So here they go.
1: What actually Fails when the injectors go?
2: is slow warm starts a sign to injector failuer?
3: What does it take to get a GM dealer to cover the injectors?
Thanks for you time and sorry for the repedativeness of my questions.

Welcome. Quick answers: The injectors don't break, they wear out. they
recieve fuel at very high pressure. Their nozzels cause the fuel to spray a
fine mist. When they wear, more fuel is injected than needed. You will see lots of smoke from the exhaust pipe. You will also probably see more
oil in the crankcase than there should be, cuz the fuel is not all burning
but washing down the cylinder walls and entering the crankcase . (Diesel
fuel thins the oil and it does not lubricate very well)
Slow warmup is not a sign of injector problems. If you were pulling with your truck, making that diesel work, it would warm up in a hurry. At normal driving speeds, it just doesn't have to work to move the truck, so
it takes longer to warm up
And take it to the dealer and talk to a service rep at the desk. You should
have paperwork that your the owner, and who the original owner was. they can check on that but want you to come beg them to look at it. And
diesels cost lots to fix. They will tell you your engine is normal, but you need a new air filter, new fuel filter, new muffler bearings, a change in
motor oil, transmission oil, all new filters.....etc. The service bill will run
you about $600.00 to $1,000.00. Good luck.

I have another question. Once gm replaces the injectors, are they replaced with an updated design or will there still be the risk of them wearing out again?

The maintenance on these trucks isn't that bad, not for normal stuff anyway. I see no need for a dealer to do it and pay out the butt. I can change the oil, oil filter, tranny filter, and fuel filter for under $100, using synthetic oil. The air filter just drops in. Your truck is also covered under the 200,000/7 year extended warranty on injectors.

MrsSpoolin i agree with you about taking care of the maintenance by my self.
What is the 200,000/7 year warrenty? Its just on the injectors?
I thought they Dmax's came with a 100k engine warrenty?

It a special policy for '01's and '02's, extending just the injector warranty. The rest of the engine is still covered by the 100,000/5 year warranty. A copy of the TSB can be found here. http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18032&highlight=injector

BTW hard starting is one of the symptoms as is SES light and codes set in ecm, fuel in oil, injector return rates, excessive smoke etc. Dealers seem to need to see several symptoms before injector replacement is authorized by GM. It's all being done on a case by case basis. I was told by dealer injector #1 was failing but gm denied warranty under the special policy because it wasn't failing in the way outlined in the "special policy". Hmmm.

Interesting. I brought my truck in Tuesday the 9th and Wednesday the 10th they called wanting me to authorize a fuel filter and oil change. THE SAME DAY as the TSB had fuel filter added, hmm.
