: Let's discuss 5th gear laydown
Max Power 08-09-2005, 10:38 AM Does anyone know what causes it to laydown in 5th gear? I know lots think it is transmission related. I assume they think this because it only does it in 5th gear? The thing I don't understand is why the transmission would command the engine for less power. The transmission is not slipping or anything so why would the transmission sometimes want the motor to limit?
Weren't the LLY's supposed to have torque management in 1st and 5th gear?
Does anyone else have any other theories?
JakeGMCHD 08-09-2005, 05:45 PM My truck use to lay down in 5th but doesn't seem to anymore. Not sure what fixed it.
jermstyle 08-09-2005, 06:55 PM Is this a problem, configuration or by design?
My truck falls on it’s face as soon as it shifts into 5th gear. BUT, when I’m on the free way over 2000 RPM it really pulls hard. It really feels like the shift point needs to be modified to make acceleration a little smoother.
Max Power 08-09-2005, 07:18 PM We don't know jermstyle, that is one of the things we have to figure out.
Max Power 08-09-2005, 07:20 PM JakeGMCHD, what are you running for programming? Is your ATS trans the original one equipped with the truck or did you do an exhange? Do you have the co-pilot?
Max Power 08-09-2005, 07:29 PM What do we know so far about it?
It seems to happen only in 5th gear at WOT or close to WOT.
The PCM is commanding 1/2 the amount of fuel it should be.
It only happens with bigger programming. The more power the worse it is??
Anything else?
It would be intersting to know under what conditions the PCM can command less fuel even though we are at WOT.
TxChristopher 08-09-2005, 07:56 PM I have never noticed my truck let up one bit in 5th. I have run it up in 5th many times for ridiculous amounts of time and speed.
.
Max Power 08-09-2005, 07:59 PM What do you run for power? I never noticed it either until I started adding more power.

What power adders are u running?
Idryfly5 08-09-2005, 08:01 PM i ran my hard from 1st to 5th with edge 3/5 and it falls on its face, but it seems to pull good for about 20mph after i accelerate when its already in 5th(example 55-75 good, 75+ horrible). prob somethin built in w/ the tranny im guessing.
Max Power 08-09-2005, 08:03 PM If you have a stock transmission it is probably just the edge backing off to protect the trans from slipping.

i wouldnt think that it would back off w/ the edge only on 3?
Max Power 08-09-2005, 08:39 PM It depends on how bad it's been beeten. It's a definate possibility.
JakeGMCHD 08-09-2005, 08:43 PM Tested the same day under similar condtions. Ran the 65hp Predator tune before and after trans swap. Stock trans would lay down bad once you hit 5th under part or full throttle. Had same problem with 40hp Predator tune. With a custom setup 01 trans truck doesn't lay down in 5th under part or full throttle. Plan to test with more power shortly. Don't have the Co-Pilot on yet.
Looking to stack this weekend.

its only been ran i 5 once, and 4 couple times. never limped the tranny, so i wouldnt think that it could've slipped this quick(only had the edge for 6 months)
Max Power 08-09-2005, 08:56 PM You are probably right. Mine would hold level 3 no problem. What version is your edge? I've never seen mine lay down with my edge v1.2

Thanks for the info. Did you change the TCM as well or just the trans itself?
JakeGMCHD 08-09-2005, 09:00 PM Just the trans.

just looked under the hood. V1.0, manf. 12/2/04
Max Power 08-09-2005, 09:03 PM Get it upgraded. The 1.2 seems to have solved all the problems I had with my ver 1.0
Max Power 08-09-2005, 09:04 PM Just the trans.
Thanks, good to know. Keep us updated. If it is indeed the trans it will be interesting to find out why.

what prob where you expirencing? i havnt had any so far *knock on wood*, and yea i have been wanting to upgrade just have never found the time to actually do it.
Max Power 08-09-2005, 09:09 PM P1093 was the biggest issue. The 1.2 runs a lot smoother and fixes a few small glitches that I don't even remember anymore.

good to know, thanks for the info :thumb:
NODMAX 08-10-2005, 07:17 AM Mine pulls really hard up to 100 +/-...Thats as fast as I wanna go with this fat girl. No lay down issues here...Is it the trans.? liftpump? tunes? I don't have a clue. Mine doesn't throw P1093's either. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to find some wood to knock on.:D
nassdmax 08-10-2005, 08:57 AM I just installed the Predator at 65hp. I am still getting the tranny to learn it's new legs, so I don't have much to contribute yet. I'll let you know what I feel with the stock tranny as soon as I feel the jitters are out of the shifts. It may be a couple of weeks cause I am in a company car during the week.
TxChristopher 08-10-2005, 09:37 AM Muhahahahahaa you guys wanna run from lets say 80 to 115? :)
I specifically went out after posting and ran it up to 110-115 a few times just to be sure, there is no letup at all.
Never had a 1093 in 16,000 miles. Never had ANY code for that matter.
.
Max Power 08-10-2005, 10:40 AM Most of the laydown I have experienced was stepping on it in 5th gear around 70 mph.
TxChristopher 08-10-2005, 10:49 AM Hmmmm thats my prime hemi stomping area. You sure?
Max Power 08-10-2005, 10:53 AM Yep. That is where most see it. I have only had it a couple times. I need to get my 1093 problems solved so I can start running bigger stacks daily.
Duratys 08-10-2005, 11:15 AM Hmmmm thats my prime hemi stomping area. You sure?
What are you running for power adders?
TxChristopher 08-10-2005, 11:46 AM What are you running for power adders?
Sorry, I never said. I run the Quadzilla Stealth Tuner, have since new. Run it set at 110hp, never take it off. Talking to Quad via email and phone he says its more like 135hp. Feels like it. I assure you the truck never lets up.
.
turbo lcc 08-10-2005, 11:10 PM Does anyone know will the copilot stop the 5th gear laydown?
Max Power 08-10-2005, 11:25 PM McRat could tell you. I am pretty sure it won't stop the laydown.
NODMAX 08-11-2005, 07:07 AM Mine doesn't lay down with the CoPilot on or off.
Idryfly5 08-11-2005, 05:03 PM i got on it today w/ the edge on 2/3 and it did fine, then did 3/3 and it did fine. so maybe i was just imagining(sp?) it:confused:
