The 5-speed can handle 800 ft-lbs of input torque, the 6-speed can go up to 900.

well that sucks
is that 800 constant or max?
and i assume that dose not include 5th gear

800 is constant, if it was the max there would be a lot of broken transmissions out there. I'd image you'd only see those numbers in the lower ranges, that's why they have to limit the engine torque.

Gears 1-4 = 900 lb-ft. Gear 5 = 680 lb-ft.

Allison Specs indicate a GROSS (flywheel) input torque of 650 LBS-ft
Of course, some here are a teeny bit beyond that.

I think a lot of it depends on how good your stock converter locks the clutch. A strong locking clutch takes a big load off the clutches inside the Ally. This will give you a much stronger coupling. IMHO this is why some Duramaxes can run a bigger hp program without limping than others. As far as what their rating is; it don't mean squat. If you are towing big loads you need a good trople converter and a Transgo shift kit along with the proper synthetic fluid and a good cooler. I believe if you do this, along with proper fluid and filter changes as I prescribe, your Ally is good for 250K trouble free miles.
