Currently my truck has a trailer brake controller in it that is fubar'd, I need to get a new one and am wondering which one is best? I searched and all I could find was brake controller problems.

Best controller hands down is the Brakesmart. It senses actual pickup brake pressure at the master cylinder. Easy to install, auto adjusts for every trailer, works on any style trailer brake system, will work up to 4 axles. Truly an awesome controller!

If you want a basic electric only controller, the Prodigy or newer P3 are probably your best choice. I use one in my Yukon and am very pleased. Certainly no Brakesmart, but considerably cheaper and still works well.

I've used numerous controllers over the years and never found any I thought were worth a damn except the ones above.

Happy towing!

Maxbrake or Brakesmart would be the best.

Brakesmart is in and out of production and sometimes hard to buy. MaxBrake is a little cheaper and has a better upgrade and warranty policy.

Prodigy/P2/P3 would be the next level down IMO

For lighter weight trailers the Prodigy/P2/P3 work good. On heavier trailers like my signature unit they need adjusting on the fly for best performance.

Agree with all the above. If you don't want to spend the $$$ on the Brakesmart though (not to mention the tapping into the brake lines) I will also agree that the Prodigy or P3 are great controllers.

If you're looking to get Prodigy/P3 type performance without the cost, the Tekonsha Primus uses the same sensor circutry as both but with a few less bells and whistles like auto-leveling, etc. The cost is also signifigantly less - I bought mine on eBay brand new for $39. I've towed coast to coast (and lots of places in between) with it and it's been a great controller.

BTW, if you have (or ever plan to buy) a Hensley style hitch do NOT buy a brakesmart - this style hitch requires that the trailer always have advanced/lead braking over the tow vehicle, something the Brakesmart doesn't handle well.

Can't say that I have used Maxbrake or Brakesmart, but I would also agree with Prodigy or P3. Both are great controllers.

Got to agree on the BrakeSmart or the MaxBrake. Pricey but worth it.
Just ran 1700 miles with the trailer after dumping the Accutrak. It just works. The trailer brakes never seem out of balance with the truck. No leveling, no setting. Trailer brakes are there when needed.:D

Another vote for P3. I've towed multipal trailers thousands of miles and had flawless operation
