Feel like a real dummy. Been all over this thing and can't locate the low side port to add coolant.

Taking a chance but the bolt holding the tube block on top of the compressor was quite loose. Oil draining down the sides and rear of the compressor around thef "O" ring seals. Hope the compressor isn't dead but thought I'd try re-charging before replacing.

Thanks,

Billy

Unbelievable,

Dealer is going to replace the compressor with 125K under warranty. This is the second one.

Would love to know where the port is too! There are two on the passenger side that look like they could be it. One closer to the firewall and one closer to the grill. Any ideas?

Between the two ports, there is a fitting. In that fitting, there is the expansion restrictor. That's where the presure goes down. Follow the line from the condenser to the high side fitting, then the restrictor, then the low side fitting, then through the firewall to the evaporator.

If in doubt, run it. The hot one is the high side, and the cold one is the low side. You should be able to feel the temperature drop across the restrictor.

high side is port 1
low side is port 2
the fitting in between the ports is where the oriface tube is located.

You will need r134a "quick connect" fittings in order to put guages on the truck. The old screw on type connectors will not work.

Where do you get these quick connect fittings?

Where do you get these quick connect fittings?

I bought a set of guages with the quick disconnects from O'Reileys auto parts........ only problem was the high pressure connection was defective so I had to bring the whole set back to them. You could probably find them at any auto parts store like Napa etc.

2 is the low side.

At any auto parts store, you should be able to buy a fill kit with a can adapter (and piercer) on one end and the correct female fitting on the other.

Pierce the can, the let a little (LITTLE) out to flush the air out of the line. Then connect it, and open it up.

The system must be running, so the low side pressure is lower than the vapor pressure in the can. That way the delta-p will push vapor out.

Do not overfill the system. That will reduce cooling performance.

Add no more than 1/3 of a can, then drive it and see if it's back to normal.

Or, the right way is to use gauges on the high and low sides, and compare the readings to the procedure in the manual.

The real right way is to evacuate the system, to a deep vacuum, and add a specified amount of r134 back in. This procedure insures that the charge is correct, and gives you new 134, since unlike r12, r134 breaks down over time.

cit1991,

Is the manual you are refering to included with the kit? I have seen kits at the autoparts store with gauges and a bottle of R134. Does it come with the quick connect fitting too?

Can you put your gauge on the high side? Is there any reason to do this? I know you must fill it from the low side but is there any reason to "check" the high side? If so, what would you be looking for?

Thanks guys!
