: Add 6 Disc External or In-Dash Changer?

My truck has the OEM single disc, XM, Onstar radio.

I want to add a 6-disc changer. Either swap out the current one with an OEM 6 disc, or add an external 6 disc.

I do not want to install one that uses and RF modulator.

Any specific recommendations? Cructchfield lists and OEM grade one that plugs into GM radios that have the AUX button. They want $300 for it thought :(

How did you get Onstar and XM without Bose in a 2003?

I'm pretty sure you could find a used indash 6-disc, and have the dealer reprogram it for your truck.

You weren't kidding about staying home and watching your post count go up due to the cast eh. :)

I was just looking on ebay at the 6 in-dash units and I might go that route. According to the window sticker of my truck, it originaly came with the 6 disc. Apparently the previous owner had it swapped out.

Now to figure out which PN works with the Bose system without having to do a lux amp upgrade and still retains the XM capability.

My concern of buying one from ebay is it being a *HOT* item and the dealer not re-programming it for me.

Yes, I do have Bose, XM, ONStar, steering wheel controls and NO tapedeck.

Since I can't go back and edit my post.....GRRR!

So, you have Bose, too. Your single-CD unit isnt the one with the tape deck too, is it? That one was actually the normal Bose radio. The 6CD was the up-option.

IIRC, the proper one ended in "4935". But I'm pretty sure you could use any 6CD from a GMT-800 (truck) and use it.

Yeah...I knew the post count would go up.

get an alpine 9855 head unit, top of the line for $399.00 plays mp3 and wma. You can fit 200 mp3 songs on a single cd. cd changers are history, upgrade to an alpine ipod module then you can access your whole lib.

My single disc does not have tape, correct. I believe it is just the normal Bose Radio.

leftmy8.1,

I dont listen to that much music in the truck, however, when we take trips, changing a CD every 30 minutes (I tend to skip lame songs) is irritating. Burning mix cds is a pita.

My wife's car has a six disc and we load it up and set it to random play.

I dont feel like spending $300 for an IPOD, $400 for an Alpine HU and then another $130 for the module to allow my onstar, steering wheel controls, etc to work, else I was going to upgrade the HU.

I love my iPod... you can get a refurb from Apple for $189 http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71206/wo/7z5wQTFDW4iG2999fsf1vYPSjK3/1.0.0.11.1.0.6.7.3.5.1.1.2.1.5.1.0.5.0 and a adapter that works to make your iPod look like the 6 disk changer for $130... Whah la... For less than that changer you have thousands of songs... carry your entire CD collection with you... Or you could get a refurb iPod mini for $179 or a shuffle 1 gig for $99... I love mine and it was Oh so easy to install... USA Spec makes the adapter... I got mine from Crutchfield.com

Hmmh, Apparently I dont know my radio that well. I got in the truck this morning and low and behold, I have the CASS too! BAH! Never use the stupid thing except for the few times I tried to play my mp3s through a cassette adapter. Man did that sound awful! Blech!

Anyone want to trade their 6 disc for a single with cass, XM and bose?

XM is a separate module, located behind your glovebox, Andrew. When you get your 6disc, your XM will work, too. OEM XM is all plug-n-play.

But doesnt the radio have to support XM? I was told it did, so that is why I am looking on ebay and here for a 6-disc that supports XM and bose.

Perhaps I am missing something here then?

Well, You have to find a 6disc with "Band" on the lower left button, same as your current CD/cassette unit. If the button on the 6disc says "AM/FM", it won't work. There are quite a few on Ebay right now.

I have been thinking of doing the same thing to my 03. I currently have the Bose sound system with the single cd player/ cassette setup. I also have the XM features with controls on the sterring wheel. Searched on e-bay and found three possible candidates for this swap. P/N 25753974 (Supposedly 05 new in the box for GM Sierra/silverado), 15184935 (Fits most 03-05 GM), 10359593 (04 Suburban) all three have the "Band" on the lower left button. went to the dealer to see if they could tell me which part number would work with my setup. The guy behind the counter looked at me like I was crazy stated that to do the swap I also had to change the wiring harness. Took about two seconds to figure out I was dealing with a lost cause. Just wondering if anyone knew which of these decks would a good canadate to swap out with the one I have now.

I would go with the '4935 one.

I have one sitting in my lap that is going in my '03 that came out of an '04. The part # on this one is 15196055. I bought this one from a gent here in MI. But...I have since found out that my best friend is wanting to swap out his OEM 6 disc changer for a single CD/cass. My only problem is I don't know if he has the Bose system in his. Let me check with him and I will get back here later. If his is a Bose, I will swap radios with him and sell you this one Andrew. I only paid $100 for it and it is like new condition. I would only ask what I paid for it.

I'll get back with you soon!

Jeff,

All Bose is to these radios is programming. If the dealer re-programs, the Tech 2 asks "Bose or non-Bose?" To my knowledge, there is nothing physically different between them. There are so dang many part numbers for these radios that its just ridiculous. I would try to find the one that probably was in that year truck, then go from there. Two good sources of info are www.radiosandmore.com, or www.specmo.com

:cool2: Thanks for the info Tom!

Andrew...I spoke with my friend and we are just going to swap radios. He wants my single cd/Cass player and I am going to take his 6 disc cd changer. So...it's yours if you want it. If you don't, I'm going to put it up for sale to everyone!

Jeff

On Edit: I did install this radio and it fit fine and powered up fine. But it locked after a few seconds because it needs reprogramming for the correct VIN.

Stupid forum. I have it set to email me whenever there is a post to this thread. It only sent me an email on the last message, not the two before it. Yes, I know I have to visit the forum after email to reset the email alert and I did that before the past two. Oh well.

Crazy Daze, I will PM you. I am interested.
