: Oil leak+fuel leak+white smoke= Injector failure?
bufford220 08-08-2005, 01:45 PM I have been reading about the injector problems with the Duramx on this site but I have been unable to diagnose my problem…although I think it may be the injectors. My truck, a 2001 2500HD w/duramx, began smelling of fuel the last couple of weeks. I searched for the leak and was able to find a drip off of the exhaust manifold where it connects to the pipe for the turbo. Although I can’t say it is coming from this location since it appears to be a low spot. The truck has run well otherwise. This weekend after taking on a few of the PA Mountains I saw white smoke coming from the exhaust. This continued at varying rates until I got home. This morning I pulled the truck into one of the garages at work to put it on a lift (I work at a TEC school…not as a mechanic) and I noted that it was now leaking oil. On the lift the oil appears to be coming from the rear oil pan…once again not sure of the origin. I can not find the/a leak. I have an appointment with a dealer in the AM but would like to go in with a little knowledge. Are these two separate problems? I could not detect any fuel in the oil by smelling the dipstick. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated?

BullydogPowered 08-08-2005, 02:02 PM how is your oil pressure? lower than normal? normal? thats another sign of diesel in the oil. white smoke is a good sign of injector failure though
TrigDiesel 08-08-2005, 03:27 PM I have the exact same problem. Mine goes to the dealer in the am too. I didnt post this in my original post about the white smoke, but I have a small oil leak in my pan too, its coming from the back of the pan around some kind of sensor. The leaks not bad though. My truck had all new injectors 10000 miles ago, but I sure hope our problems arent from head gasket or rings.
bufford220 08-08-2005, 03:36 PM Oil pressure hasn't change.
I hope it isn't a head gasket or rings either.
When she is running the fluids flow steady, although the oil level looks OK.
TrigDiesel 08-08-2005, 05:42 PM Are you seeing any diffrence in the amount of smoke you see during diffrent times of the day? I see the most smoke from 7:30 to about 12:00. It really seems like the smoke is alot easier to see at those times. I know that sounds crazy but here in Ky last week it was 90+ everyday and I didnt see any white smoke at all except early in the mornins. If I did see any in the afternoons, it was just a puff when the turbo spooled in the low gears. Now at night when I go home (9pm to 1 am) I see smoke again. Air temp have anything to do with the way that will look in the atmosphere?
bufford220 08-08-2005, 06:16 PM I really can't say. I just noticed the smoke yesterday afternoon on the way home from a trip. It was very obvious under heavy acceleration. I only have a short ride to work in the AM and took it easy. I am dropping it off tonight and will pay more attention on the way to the dealer.

bufford220 08-09-2005, 02:25 PM Just got my truck back. I had a "High pressure fuel leak, found #5 injector line loose at fuel rail." $157.00 later the truck is back home and hopefully all is well.

TrigDiesel 08-10-2005, 08:46 AM Took mine in yesterday am. Called at noon said they couldnt find the problem or make it smoke anymore. I told them I would be there at 3. When I got there, I asked to talk to the tech, shop foreman told me not to bother him, he was busy, they pulled him off my truck right after they called me. I told him to get my bill and give me my damn truck. I have a appointment with a dealer a couple counties away tomorrow at 9 am. I did get to talk to the tech when he brought my ticket to the counter, said he had done all injection test EXCEPT high pressure. Told me nothing had led him to that.......whatever, these people werent even aware that 01 and 02 had 200k mile warranty on injectors. We will see what thursday brings.
Paul Clancy 08-10-2005, 09:03 AM If the 2nd dealer finds a warranty fault be sure to call the first dealer and demand your money back and tell them if not your next call is to GM.
TrigDiesel 08-10-2005, 09:22 AM Thanks, speaking of which, what is the number for GM to discuss warranty issues and things like this?
TrigDiesel 08-12-2005, 08:43 PM Well yesterday, got a call from the dealer that I took my truck too. That asked me if I had been seeing any coolant loss, which I havent becasue I havent gotten to drive the damn truck but a few hundred miles yet. Called later and said they had replaced the fuel filter, and it wasnt smoking, come pick er up. Got there, talked to the service rep, paid the cashier, went and got in her. Stomped the gas and it puked white smoke. Went back in threw the keys on the counter and told em to call me when it was fixed. Called me this mornin, said they were bringing it in to fix it. Called at 4 45 today to say they hadnt. Said they had tinkered with her all day but to no avail. TINKERED???????
My biggest mistake in this whole three weeks when I got the truck was not taking the damn thing back when I test drove it and found the midshaft bearing out. Nooooo had to let em fix it and act like it was bound to happen. And I shoulda not bought from a mom and pop truck lot. I still dont know if they have run a high pressure test. Called gm customer service last night and they started a case file on me. (Good people, by the way.) I just dont know right now, I wish I knew my rights on returning the truck and getting my money back, it aint been 30 days yet.
But theres something inside me that wont let me do it. I have no *#&$%ing idea what that is, but its just some kinda gut feeling telling me to stick it out. I need a beer, I will update yall monday.
TrigDiesel 08-19-2005, 08:29 AM Got my truck back from the dealer on monday. Again, they couldnt find anything with the injectors said everything was balancing right, psi was good. Changed the fuel filter. I drove it up until thursday am with the normal small amount of blue smoke at acceleration. Then I hooked it to a wagon load of tobacoo yesterday and it really really smoked. Even when the wagon was unloaded, it still smoked when I accelerated. Coolent levels are still good. I think the truck has used a little oil though. All in all since I got the truck, I have drove maybe 1200 miles in 30 days, Of what I can tell, it has used maybe a half quart. But since yesterday pullin those wagons I can smell oil when I get out of the truck after driving it. Engine temp is still good, oil pressure is still good (above 50 psi under normail driving conditions, have seen it as high 70). Im still searching for a good tech here close to me here in kentucky.
TrigDiesel 08-19-2005, 09:46 AM I forgot to add that last night I checked the intake (front) and the side of the turbo going into the intercooler and found no oil so I dont think that its a blowby in the turbo. Im gonna check the oil again today and post back on how much the truck has used.
