Ok guys im starting a new project, building a bumper pull 7' x 20'. If you have something within the 18'-22' range, could you measure the distance from the front of the deck to the first spring hanger? Just want to make sure i have a well balanced trailer!!!

Also pics would be nice so i can get some ideas....I'll post pics along the way!

I got a 24' bumper pull I can pull the measurement off of at work tomorrow. It's a 22 foot deck with 2' dovetail so the measurement should be the same as a regular 22'. I can grab some pics as well.

That would be great. I plan on making mine a either 20' with a 2' dovetail or a 18' with a 2' dove tail. If you could grab some pics of the structural parts of the trailer that would be great!

My flatbed was originally a 7' x 20' deck. I have since modified it to an 8' x 22' deck, but it's all extra side and back overhang so no structural changes. Some measurements:

From center of 2-5/16" ball to front of deck = 4'-5"
From front of deck to front spring hanger pin = 9'-10"
From front of deck to center of front axle = 11'-1"

It's a fairly light-duty trailer used to haul ATV's and sometimes construction materials. Two 3,500# axles. 6" 'C' channel frame with 4" 'C' channel cross members set 24" OC. Pressure treated 2x8 solid deck. It originally had a 300# steel mesh ramp/gate on the back but I took it off and added the extra 2' so it could haul 6 ATV's. Cantilevered a few inches extra width on either side so it has 8' width clear between the rails.

Rule of thumb is. Measure and mark center of deck, then measure back 1" for every foot of deck length that is where axle center should be. If tandem axle center of the two. So your 20' trailer would have the axle center at 11' 8"

when you say axle center ar 11'-8" do you mean center of front axle or center of both axles?

Any pics? Sounds interesting!

That sounds pretty close to mine. The center between the two axles is 12'-6" back from the front of the deck. Using the above formula for the original 20' deck puts it at the same 11'-8" as Premis's example. BUT, my original trailer had that heavy steel rear ramp. Looks like I guestimated close by removing the ramp and adding the extra 24" to the rear.

Sorry, no pics. It's currently all covered with canoes, lumber, ladders and snow.
