: Bang!
loucas916 08-07-2005, 08:52 PM I've been lurking around this site and because of it, I purchased a 2005 chevy 2500hd crewcab 4x4 and love it. It is my first diesel and my very first brand new car. Anyway, today I was driving down the road (unloaded) and BANG, sounded like an explosion under the hood, and the truck started to blow a lot of black smoke and had no power to it. Luckily, I was close to home and got it to my house, but it looked as if there was very little oil pressure according to the gauge. Does anyone have a clue as to what had happened to my truck? There were no check engine lights lit up, and the truck only has 2500 miles on it!!! I had it towed to the dealership, but that doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. There are no mods to this truck, other than bfg 285's. Thanks in advanced for any help/opinions
Idle_Chatter 08-07-2005, 09:02 PM Doesn't sound good -a bang is never a good thing. But, I suspect that it *may* be minor if you popped an intake hose between the turbo outlet and the intake manifold. This has happened before, and although I don't recall "bangs" it will certainly cause reduced power and black smoke from overfueling. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it's just tightening a hose clamp back up!
C.A.P 08-07-2005, 09:02 PM GUARANTEED BLOWN TURBO< just went through it , 12 guage under hood, = blown center shaft = oil out exaust= no oil presure= STEALERSHIP questioning you about after market mods. I had same thing happen, luckly , it was only a turbo, do some research and look into the GM turbo cam bering issue, no way it should blow at stock at low milage
dmaxalliTech 08-07-2005, 09:21 PM blown intercooler hose... common on the LLY
88Magnum 08-07-2005, 10:25 PM or blown connection due to loose clamping pressure? If so, I'll be checking my new 05....Where is that guy who gorillla tightens the oil filter??\
Mike
These things should not be happening at this point in the game. Ford had loads of intercooer hose pops over the years.... the solution always being a better means of clamping. This is not rocket science for a designer.
aka108 08-07-2005, 10:37 PM Not rocket sience for a engineer or designer but it also has to go thru the bean counters and that's where problems arise in my estimation. Never better but cheaper.
Mike_in_Wisc 08-07-2005, 11:09 PM Well, the other side of the same coin. Brought my 04.5 home in the evening. Went to work the next day, got the same big BANG pulling out of the parking lot with less than 200 miles or so on it. No smoke, no missing, no nothing. Didn't have a change of underwear with me so had to drive home 30 miles as was. Stopped at the stealer on the way. Only comment was "Huh, never heard that one before. Let us know if it happens again." 45,000 miles so far and never has happened again. Couple of weeks later I found and joined this forum. I feel real lucky, I haven't had any of the problems some members are having. But I do keep a piece of wood handy for knocking on.

I don't know what the heck could have happened to your truck (lots of good posts though), BUT, sure would like to. Get back to us when you got er' fixed...

The much vaunted "six sigma" quality programs, like many quality initiatives over the past 50 years almost instantaneously morph into cost savings programs. While feeding customers crap like "Quality is Job 1" (for example) the emphasis is on lower cost and better quality - in that order, but doesn't take long for the empahsis on the latter to be disregarded altogether. In that respect you can always buy cheaper oats after they've passed through the horse. Now if you can sell those oats (through your stealer network) to naive, but hopeful consumers based on sales hype and "employee discounts for everyone" you can make a little money. GM can't even do that much because they've been buying off the unions for 60 years. Unless your present truck simply will not do what you need to be doing, hold on to your wallet. Maintenance on a good truck is cheaper than depreciation on a new one - every day.
lt5107 08-08-2005, 09:02 AM Blown intercooler hose, my 4.5 has did it several times. Scared the hell out of me each time. It is a very poor design and was not cheap to build. The fix is to "glue" the hose on.

Hmm from I have been reading, It doesn't appear that GM is operating anywhere near the 6 sigma level. ( But then again what car maker is)?
loucas916 08-08-2005, 05:58 PM Well, I talked to the dealer today, and they said that a clamp had come off of one of the tubes to the turbo. They said it was no big deal, just had to be secured better. I haven't driven it yet, becuase they are going to keep it so they can replace the cd player in the truck. The cd player ate my metallica cd and won't play it or give it back. When I finally get the truck back tommorrow, is there anything I should know, or look at in particular? Thanks for all of your help thus far, its been very appreciated.
leftmy8.1 08-08-2005, 06:39 PM What does hoarse crap have to do with anything ?
leftmy8.1 08-08-2005, 06:46 PM locus916, any chance the wife or somebody else could have put gasoline in your tank ?
loucas916 08-08-2005, 06:52 PM My wife knows that it is diesel only, I make it a point to tell her, but I did have my truck serviced by this same dealership thursday of last week, and when they were finished, they had some kid fill it with diesel and wash it. The manager made sure to tell the kid to put diesel in it. I know, this, because I was standing right there. The manager told me that he always makes sure to tell the kids its a diesel , because they have put regular gas in other trucks before........hmmmmmmm.
If this kid did put regular gas in my truck, what should I look for and what are some things that I should look into?
leftmy8.1 08-08-2005, 07:03 PM depends on the concentration, but in general it will combust too early and try to drive the crank the wrong way. Most of the time it will run real ratty. Newer diesles are pretty strong and can survive such a thing, but on an older diesle you can blow the heads off the truck.

Hardly anyone else is either. It's a big public relations promotion to make you think you're getting something special, when all you're really getting is used oats. (for leftmy's question, it's an analogy.)

lt5107 08-09-2005, 08:51 AM loucas916,
There is a TSB on that hose coming off, make sure the dealer follows it or it will keep coming off (as mine did several times).
killerbee 08-09-2005, 09:06 AM a clamp had come off of one of the tubes to the turbo. ... The cd player ate my metallica cd and won't play it or give it back. When I finally get the truck back tommorrow, is there anything I should know .
YES, never play metallica, no wonder your truck doesn't like you.
loucas916 08-09-2005, 09:50 AM should I play some Tom Jones?:ro)
TheBac 08-09-2005, 10:26 AM Maybe Kenny G?!?

Metallica is too soft:lol:
_nar_ 08-09-2005, 12:53 PM Why would you put hoobaskank in the same category as rammstien? That's just wrong...
loucas916 08-09-2005, 08:06 PM ok, got my truck fixed, and my cd player replaced, lets see if this eats my sublime cd. Thanks for the help with the previous problem.
