Might wanna check the current issue of Diesel Power Magazine. They did an article on swapping a Cummins engine into anything. Also, some good resources for parts that would make the swap easier, i.e. adapters, engine craddles, and crossmembers along with some websites for more info. I believe there is also some info on what you can expect to pay for a used engine, and the horse power and torque ratings for the different Cummins engines 3.9L to 6.7L.

Good luck.

got that new issue of diesel power today and looked through the article, saw some pretty usefull info, i also came across an article near the end about swappin a 5.9 12 valve into a 91 burb, gonna keep an eye on there progress and see how they went about it, maybe get some tips and tricks

Yeah the "Doomsday Diesel" was a good article and I will also be following that one. I would really like to do an early 70's (72) Chevy short bed 4x4 with a 4BT Cummins and a built 700R4 for running around town. But prices for those trucks are kinda pricey for the 4x4 models, if you can find one.

If you pay someone to do it; the going rate is $9K for labor. I have seen the motor mounts and they go for $5-600. The other pieces are where you can save a lot of money. A junkyard will be your best friend. I have looked for another project and found that unless you know the right people, it's cheaper to buy Dodge donor than source a motor by itself. I do know people that generally have 6BTs or ISBs for sale.

most of what ive seen for sale engine wise are bare blocks, which is somewhat what im looking for, since i want to build it up with some more power and what not for towing, but the ones ive found dont have the heads or crank, i was also curious about using gm accessories with the engine(alternators, power steering, ac, etc), would they be able to work or would i have to get dodge accessories?

Dude, I made a gm alternator fit an '82 toyota. You should be able to make the alternator fit a cummins. The a/c and the power steering pump should work from the dodge. The biggest thing would matching the pulley up for the alternator. with enough washers or a real steady hand with a grinder you shouldn't have many problems.

The alternator will more than likely be a standard one wire unit from Napa or just use the old GM one you probably have. The bracket from a 6BT is very similar to the one you have. The A/C probably won't fit. GM frames are more narrow than a Dodge and if it's two wheel drive the factory compressor will hit the idler arm mount. You will likely need to convert your 6BT to a high mount compressor. The parts for the motor cost around $600 new or $400 used if you can find them. The compressor is a whole other story. Depending on what year 6BT you find you will be looking for a Sanden unit with the right number of pulley grooves to match the rest of the serpentine system or the right pulley to match you v-belts. Most likely you will need a Sanden SD7 series unit. Then you need to look at whether or not you can use the stock SD7 or side port model. Power steering will be another issue. I would recommend using a GM hydroboost brake/power steering unit and skip trying to use the vacuum pump. You will have to use the power steering pump from the Dodge since the power steering/vacuum pump are gear driven and run from the back of the front plate. Some of this gets much harder when you buy just a block and head. The little pieces can nickle and dime you to death.

chances are i would most likely keep the timing case and other parts if there still in good shape, if not i have found a place that sells them as replacements if yours was cracked by the KDP, which is another thing im going to solve when i get the engine, and im lookin for a 94-98 p-pumped 12 valve

i wasnt really thinkin it would cost a whole lot for the engine and tranny build up, or for some of the other stuff, but i do plan on restoring the body and interior and that probly will cost a bit

I spent close to 10,000.00 when I put a 2001 cummins into my 85 Burb. I already had one ton running gear and a nvg 4500 tranny. I paid 5000.00 for a low mileage engine, then it turned out that I got screwed on the turbo, so cough up some more for a turbo, missing lift pump, fabricated all of the motor mounts myself, bought a used intercooler and boots and made it fit, dodge radiator, dodge flywheel that was machined to take a ball bearing pilot, centerforce clutch, then on to finding a round bolt pattern np 205. After toasting two 32 spline outputs on the nvg 4500 and the mating input shafts, back to the drawing board. New output shaft fully splined and new input for 205 and new adapter machined and we were in business. Then I had to add some power adders and then some more and when I was done, about 450 rwhp and about 10,000.00 invested. Sold the burb 3 years ago to a guy from San Diego for 15k.
