This is my first diesel and any advice would be appreciated. The first red flag was when my tranny temp hit 250, I was up and down a few steep grades, but not pulling a thing. Just cruising around the city it hits 195, and shifts very irradict. If I step into it it always smokes sometimes black and sometimes white. My EGT is set to back out at 1250, is this to low? because I can hit that within 5sec on mode 3. I have never been able to open it right up, in fear of blowing it up. Should a guy upgrade tranny and exhaust, or remove juice ,cold air filter and pay it doesnt fall to pieces.

Thanks in advance.
Diesel Virgin.

you need to elaborate what you were doing to make your trans temps this high and not pulling. use search for egt settings 195 trans temp should not be problem. lots of knowledgeable people here that have answered all your questions and more. dmax is pretty much bullet proof imo. should not be able to blow it up, if youuse this forum and common sense good luck.

I wouldn't go that far. I blew a headgasket on 90 Juice and lp. Limped the tranny at will. Never had heat problems though.

The key words in jetboatjockey's post were: Common sense.

2001 were much more prone to head gasket leakage (not blowing) although VERY uncommon...

As for trans temps, they sound excessive. Mine never get that high, BUT if a guy races around a lot it will get hot.
