My 2011 LTZ has about 2,400 miles on it and I noticed a leak from underneath. It turned out to be a slow leak on the steering gear box seal. The bummer part is the dealer is saying they can't find the part because it's such a new vehicle and it might take some time. It's been two weeks and nothing. I know the problem is not a big deal but I just expect a bit more action after investing 50K on a vehicle. You would think GM could source the part from an assembly plant.

I've had many new Subarus over the last few years and had a couple initial problems but they always got the parts quickly even for the cars that were manufactured in Japan (WRX STi). Come on GM!

I can't believe its a new steering box design. I could be wrong. Same thing happened to my 05 after 1 month of ownership having bought it new. I would find out if its the same box as previous model years. If it is, any parts store can get the seal kit.

I believe the dealer is searching for a replacement steering gear box and not just a seal kit. Does this sound odd?

That Lucas P/S stop leak works works well, I'd put some in until the part comes in, then change it

Do NOT put in a stop leak…issues may arise.

it is a new box for 11 from what i was told, if its a issue that causes the truck to be "down" they can get gm to pull some strings, ( standard proceedure) if its a "minor" leak than it can take a week or two which isn't uncommon with new models.

Update - almost four weeks after discovery of the leaking steering box and still no part. Dealer called and left a message indicating that this was being transferred to "Engineering" so that the part could be procured from the line. Fortunately the leak is so slow that this has not been an issue operating the vehicle but what if this had been more severe or a more critical part?

then the issue would have been pushed up further, if its a part that can "wait" then they run through certain channels, if its a part that makes the truck "down" then there is other avenues that gm can use. Its a process we use everyday at work.

At times we can overnight parts, if required we can also get the district manager involved and he has ways of getting things done as well.
