In July of 2001 I bought a new 4WD Duramax with Allison transmission. 3 months later a new injection pump had to be installed. Was OK for the next 90,000 miles but then had transmission problems. Since it was out of warranty, I carried it to the Allison dealer. 4 out of 6 flex plate bolts on the torque converter were loose. Had to replace it. Mechanic said this was the 4th or 5th Duramax with the same problem. 6 months later, the transfer case had to be replaced. The oil pump retainer cup in transfer case had broken causing the pump to rub a hole in the case. It had to be replaced. 15 days later (128,000 miles), the injector pump had to be replaced again(the computer also said 4 of 8 injectors were borderline). 2 hours after picking it up, the truck started belching smoke and lost oil pressure. Chevy said one of the injectors had broken (?) and it would cost $4500 to repair moter. I asked him what his advice would be and he said "call Chevy". We've taken care of this truck as we have our others (2 Dodge Cummins, 1 Ford powerstroke) but it just continues to break.

Have any of you had or heard of these kind of problems. Does anyone know how to directly contact a zone service manager? I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks

No, I'm not a Dodge salesman although at least in my case, they have outperformed the Chevy. I'm hoping that someway I can contact the zone service manager and explain my situation. I think that if I could, he'd see that all of the problems I've had were due to design and/or manufacturing flaws and perhaps work with me to arrive at a solution. Probably wishful thinking though.

Bruno,

Glad to hear you are not working for the enemy. The problems you mentioned have all been covered somewhere on this site before. They were all covered under warranty and chalked uo to manufacturing defects. It is too bad yours happened outside of warranty. I guess they figure after 100K you owe then some more money if want to keep drivin there truck? I would be persistent in trying to contact a zone manager. Mention this site and how many viewers there are and how many potential buyers there are. This might help?

Look in the back of your owners manual ... This should assist you in finding info I believe on regional help ....Sell it and buy a 6 liter Ford I hear they are having great succes with the engine and Torqueshift, that's what I'm doing .... http://mail.wackywack.com/forum/smileys/Pinch.gif

Bruno,

Good luck with every local, regional, national and world manager you can cry to. If you have three times the success I had when I went through similar problems, you will still have nothing.

Oops, I'm wrong. You will still have to deal with the truck and lots of debt. That's something????

The problems associated with 1st year Duramax engines have been well documented. From personal experience with Corvettes over the years, I know that Chevy/GM don't wait until the beginning of the model year to make changes - they make them throughout the year to increase reliability, performance, etc.

You may be experiencing problems because your DMax is a first year DMax truck.

I know guys who've had Fords and Dodges who've had problems too - big problems with Dodge transmissions. So far I'm extremely pleased with my 2004 DMax, although this is my first diesel experience and I really don't have a frame of reference to compare it to.

My '01 is Purrrfect. I'll check back in another 50K and see if I am still happy.

For starters it sounds like you need injectors. Obviously...belching smoke and no oil pressure. Generally when replacing an Inj. pump Its generally a good idea to replace injectors too, because a new pump is pumping at much higher psi then it was before, and further it can cause older injectors to piddle out because they arent "used" to getting that high of a psi. Let me remind you I am not a mechanic, dont claim to be one, but thats what Ive been told by many diesel mechanics.

T-case going, well it sucks, tranny going too, that sucks. Vehicles are a liability as soon as 3/36 is up and engines 5/100.

Personally Id crap can it and start again. Inj. pumps, T-cases, are the last thing id expect to hear failure of, because I never really have. Loose TC bolts yeah problem with 01's. Inj. hell I havent seen a set make it past 110K miles in any vehicle I've owned Cat-6.5-6.2

make your decisions wisely
