has anyone had a lot of noise coming from th vacuum pump before failure? i still have good vacuum function, wastegate still operates just fine, but at idle, the pump is making a hell of a noise, worse when the belt is loaded (AC or hydraulic steering/brakes activated). anyone have any experience here? looking for some input. Thanks alot

i might be looking at the crankshaft pulley if i were you, i had alot of noise when under load of the powersteering and such. i replaced the vac pump (which was bad anyway) but the noise was still there. looked even deeper and the rubber vibratioin dampener was completely split inside so the pulley was basically in two pieces.

When your standing in front of the truck, it sounds like a loose heat sheild vibrating.
Tensioner? Alternator?
WD40 doesn't seem to harm the pump if you spray some into the vac lines, but I'm not sure.
Take the belt off and inspect all bearings is runs over and the harmonic balancer. There's a diagram on top of the fan shroud showing how the belt runs; you'll need it when you put it back on.

Pfloyd;
If your have close to 200K miles and still have the orginal crankshaft pulley your way ahead of the game, lot of them have been replaced under 100K. I would replace it just to be sure and ofr my money I would dump the vacum pump install a Turbo Master and replace the serpantine belt with a 1993 belt and no more vacum system to maintain. (damn things)
