: HIGH oil pressure (like "gauge-maxed-out" high)??
DURAtotheMAX 08-04-2005, 08:31 PM Alright...my first post on oil pressure was concern about it being too low (everyone said it was fine, thanks for the reassurance everyone)...now my oil pressure when I first start the truck, the gauge reads a little under 120 PSI!!!  When I accellerate, it completely maxes out the gauge. After a while and hte truck warms up to its normal temp (mine doesnt overheat:p: even on 105* days towing), the oil goes down to around ~55 at idle and probly ~70 PSI at 75 MPH. I know low oil pressure can hurt an engine...but can high oil pressure do anything?? There must be some sort of relief valve in the system. I run Rotella T and changed the oil at 4000 miles...truck has about 6000 on it now and I will change it again at 7000 when I do the fuel filter. Oil pressure was fine after I changed the oil...it only started with the crazy-high pressure about 100 miles ago. Truck runs beautifully otherwise so it hasnt concerned me THAT much...but I would like a definitive "its fine" from you guys to completely be at ease!! :help:
thanks in advance

Texasdeere 08-04-2005, 10:18 PM Ben, I would definitely get it looked at by the dealer, unless it is -30 degrees outside.
Max Power 08-04-2005, 10:21 PM High pressure could be bad because it could be a restrictions somewhere. I woud bet there is something wrong electrically rather then mechanically but don't take a chance, get it looked at.
TxChristopher 08-05-2005, 07:04 AM Sender or gauge, I don't think the bypass will allow that much pressure to build....
.
DURAtotheMAX 08-05-2005, 08:18 AM Now...I DID just have the whole instrument cluster replaced due to a burnt out tranny temp gauge light (who was the genious that didnt make those bulbs replaceable??) I think the whole high PSI issue started maybe 2 days after I replaced the cluster. Ill take it to the dealer today anyway...

Aren't the lights in there LED lights?
txguppy 08-05-2005, 11:33 AM I read some instructions awhile back for a gauge cluster face plate swap. They said to take a picture of your factory gauge, So that when you re-install the gauge needles they can be indexed in the same position.
DURAtotheMAX 08-07-2005, 12:31 AM Nah I dont think they're LED's...I could be wrong tho.

1BADDMAX 08-16-2005, 02:45 PM My oil pressure gauge is reading way too high. I pulled the cluster apart and cannot fix it. At least I got it to say on 35 PSI now instead of pointing at OIL. The other gauges will reset themselves even if you accidently move them. Do not pull them out of the pin though or I'm sure they will be off.

I just had the instrument cluster replaced in mine also, and the oil pressure in mine is doing the same thing. Also, I no longer have the O/D OFF light. You may want to check that on yours also.
On a side note GM was nice enough to do a "rollback" on my odometer
when I took it in for the replacement my odometer read about 6950 Miles.
With the new one it read 3217 Miles. I mentioned this to the dealer and they said that it is illegal for them to make an adjustment. Thank you GM for the "rollback".
DURAtotheMAX 08-16-2005, 09:23 PM YES!!! My O/D lockout light doesnt work either!!!!! (ever since the replacement cluster). And my oil pressure is still wacked out until about 45 minutes after warmup.

skytop49 08-16-2005, 10:09 PM My guess is that this is an updated cluster, probably intended, to quell all of the concerns related to the low oil pressure concerns. Mine is doing the same thing. I am not concerned.
I do have a question though. The reason I had my cluster replaced was because the coolant temp gauge was not returning to 160 deg even after sitting all night. It always reads 170 deg or above even when cold, and still dose even after the replacement cluster.
What dose your temp gauge read when it has sat ovenight?
DURAtotheMAX 08-16-2005, 10:25 PM mine reads 160, like it should. One other difference I noticed...I thought by getting a new cluster that i'd get the new "Fuel Filter life" minder...well of course I didnt. But what I did get was a "Heater Performance" option in the "vehicle settings" menu. AND IT DELETED MY HIGH IDLE OPTION!!!!!!!! Now im assuming this "heater performance" is the same thing, just renamed for not as mechanically inclined drivers...but if its something totally different, and they actually deleted my high-idle option, im gonna flip. Im going to college in WAY WAY upstate New York...like im talking 30 below 0 at night...and im gonna need the engine to be idleing as fast as possible the whole time!!!
---Ben
BTW does anyone else have this "Heater performance" option??
skytop49 08-16-2005, 10:33 PM I just checked my vehicle setting. Yes, I now also have the heater preformance setting. Where are you going to school? I have a snowmobiling cabin in upstate NY. You are right you will need the high idol feature.
DURAtotheMAX 08-16-2005, 10:38 PM Im gonna ask some other people if the heater performance is the same thing as high idle....im going to SLU.
