DMAXITOL 08-04-2005, 12:43 AM This worked on my D/A. I removed the rock guard/skid plate from under the front of the truck. Got a solid 20* drop in tranny temps and the fan runs about 70% less while towing! You'll have to wire tie the lower radiator hose to the bracket, and I would suggest replace'n it this winter, hope this helps some of the "over heaters"

Thanks Bud.
TheBac 08-04-2005, 12:54 AM good idea. Why not remove it and put holes in it (ala swiss cheesin' it)? then remount it. Would that work the same?
Reineke 08-04-2005, 05:04 AM Mine did not come with the skid plate package and does not overheat. Interesting find here.

Which skid plate, the black plastic splash guard in the very front or the metal one underneath?
thanks
oteo125 08-04-2005, 11:14 AM where he talks about the lower radiator hose it would have to be the plastic splash guard.

Is your truck a 4x4 ? I have not seen alot of discussion come to think of it on 4x VS 2x Oheats , another question for the mix.

How is your lower hose secured ?
ratlover 08-04-2005, 11:49 AM its got a lil clip that hooks onto the plastic shield. if you look at the shield from the bottom you will see a little tit poking though in the middle closer to the bumper

Thank Rat, I ment on the ones without the skid plate, (plastic shield).
marky 08-04-2005, 12:39 PM What is the theory as to why this helps? Does it improve airflow through the radiator stack, or is there some other explanation.?
I don't have a pryo and can't measure EGTs. Any knowlege on how this could affect EGT's? If airflow past the block is changed, could it help/hurt EGTs?

Mitchagain 08-04-2005, 05:43 PM Not trying to highjack your post but here is my story when I removed the plastic cover on my 02 LB7. I used a piece of 1.5"x6", 1/8" thick black iron bent to about 45* angle with a 1/4" hole to fix my radiator hose into original place. read my story...

killerbee 08-04-2005, 06:24 PM This may be more of a chevy help than a GMC help, but it does work.
I would wonder if it is important enough to mod, rather than discard. I'll try that next.
If I see what is happening, then just putting a block in the space above the guard, that leads to the shroud, would be an even better solution. Because the overall shape of that plate should provide a pretty good vacuum at the back edge drawing underhood air out.

I get my truck back this wednesday, will let you know then.

Good observation Carhauler, you may be on to something here.:ro)
killerbee 08-05-2005, 12:57 PM There was a number of 4x posts, saying that they do not OH in the last 5000 posts. However, that didn't really mean anything with regard to skid plates, as they are an option, and not standard on 4x (from what I remember)
Snapper692 08-05-2005, 01:22 PM Man, at this point, I'd drive with my hood off if it ment the fan would run less!!! Since I sit in stop & go traffic my whole drive home, the fan is always on. Nothing like listening to that thing for 25 miles! Im gonna have to try removing that skid plate and see if that helps.
What are the thoughts on "swiss cheesing" it?
killerbee 08-05-2005, 03:54 PM snapper, geez
you live next door. I have your solution in my garage.

DMAXITOL 08-07-2005, 09:19 PM Not a cure all for sure, but it has helped my cause! It must improve air flow through the stack , around the oil and tranny pans. Might even help pull heat away from the manifolds ?
Romark1 08-07-2005, 09:22 PM So you just removed this piece and that is all you did?
Mark
DMAXITOL 08-07-2005, 09:38 PM That's it! The constant fan and high temps were starting to frazzle my brain and oil viscosity! I'm work'n on the plastic piece in the two slots in the bumper and look'n at some mods for the lower bumper area also for the future.
Hooky 08-07-2005, 10:18 PM I took mine off and slotted it with my dremmel tool. The plastic skid plate gets its strength from alternating ridges and grooves. I slotted out the grooves and left the ridges and re-installed the plate. It looks like a factory job and still provides an attachment point for the lower radiator hose. It makes sense that any additonal air going through this skid plate should help keep things cooler. I have had no overheating problems so far with my D-max, but am always open to anything that improves cooling or air flow.
NewD-MaxLLY 08-07-2005, 11:02 PM Check the mods on the First Gen LB7 area, Engine Tempurature....on a serious side. Reply #5 has picts and #8 has reply to Killerbee and Mitchagain.
Sorry,
Carl
