Any ideas on replacing a 6.0L gasser in say a 2007 classic with an older 12V cummins?

I know the 4L80-E can run with a standalone controller - what else would be necessary to ensure the push button 4wd & speedo/guages work correctly and to make the truck work seamlessly? Just one of those "bored at work" moments would love some input :)

I would start thinking about how you are going to get the power brakes and steering to work. You may need a hydroboost-type setup. The entire fuel system will need to be redone as well.

Brakes & PS would be fine - rare to see a cummins w/o a PS pump. Computer-related stuff related to the ECM is my biggest concern.

I'm thinking the 4L80e had better be your biggest concern, unless it's built.

Haha, I've thought lots about swapping my 6.0 out for something else. Its too good of an engine. I was thinking a 4L80e behind a cummins in my '80 K3500. Since the Allison came out people have given the 4L80e a bad wrap, when its actually a great transmission.

4wd shouldn't be much of an issue since you will be training the stock TC, guages would be a headache...

I've owned a couple 4L80e trucks, and lost the trans in both...one truck ate 3 of them [2 were high $$$ rebuilds] behind a worn out 454 before I got tired of it all and installed a manual 4-speed+gear splitter. I will say the 4L80e in our 8100 Suburban has been good [knock on wood!], but they simply aren't made for the torque of a *good* diesel [6.5L don't count!].

Yeah the transmission can be built to handle a mild 12 valve or even an 8 valve if I went with a 4BT :) - Lots of beefy stuff for the 4L80

you can get about 100extra HP with DIY mods, + 90HP injectors are about $350 for a set of six. Mechanical has its benefits.
