I drove myself a crew-cab 5500 with the Allison Duramax combo. I must say i am very impressed with the power of this truck, granted it was just a cab and chassis, but it hit 70 easily compared to my International hitting 65 at a leisurely pace. I realize that the extra 3000 lbs from my box and the wind resistance will slow the truck down quite a bit, but I believe it will be stronger than my current engine combo.
The salesman told me he had never had a customer say they got less than 11 MPG in a simliar truck, but say at even at a 10.5 mpg clip it would save me approximately 250 bucks a month in fuel. What I loved also was the huge crew cab area. My uncle sat behind me and his knees were a foot from the back of the drivers seat. I am thinking I can definately make a sleeping area back there and be very comfortable.
Common sense is telling me to wait the winter out and see how freight goes, but logical thinking points me towards the new vehicle that wont cost me that much more and wont kill me with a costly breakdown for at least the first 3 years.
