: 6.0 MPG Improvement
jwolfe3 11-11-2010, 09:19 PM I have a 2007 2500HD with a 6.0 and I am getting around 10 MPG or so. I have 373 rear ends. I had a 1500 with a 5.3L before this. I am not very impressed with the 6.0 engine. Is there anything that I can do to increase the MPG and make the truck tow with more power? I mean it is not a dog, but it is not burning up with power either. I would like to upgrade to a 285 tire, but afraid to do so (power loss and decreased MPG). Would a cold air intake or one of those modules that goes through the MAF to mix the fuel/air ratio help (or are they junk?)Thanks in advance for any help!

palukie 11-11-2010, 10:21 PM jwolfe3 - is that 10mpg both city/highway? I just bought a 2011 HD with the 6.0 and I am getting 15 on the Highway and 12.5 in the city. This is way different than my 06 Duramax that was totalled. I would have gone with another Diesel but starting at 52K wasn't in my budget. I was thinking of 285's like my old truck but I do not want to give up my mileage also. Do you or have you towed with your truck yet? If so what size trailer are you towing?
bmcnally 11-13-2010, 11:11 AM blackbear wakes the 6.0's up like right now
jwolfe3 11-13-2010, 12:52 PM What can I expect from this, speed or pulling power? I am more interested about torque and pulling power out of it than top end speed. Has anyone ever did a dyno to see how much increase that you gain over stock? I am not doubting anything in any way, I just never dealt with anything like this before...Thanks again everyone!!!!
obnoxus 11-13-2010, 03:51 PM yup,,,,blackbear made huge improvements in my old 6.0
power and mpg
mycirus 11-16-2010, 08:33 AM I tow a 13k fifth wheel with my 01 Gasser 6.0 and it did okay. Wont win races but will hold 65 on highway fine. Hills slow you down a little but it gets the job done.

palukie 11-16-2010, 09:09 PM mycirus- have you done any mods to your truck? How big are the hills that you go up and how fast were you going? I don't want to get a programmer because it will void your warranty.
Thanks
mycirus 11-16-2010, 09:25 PM My gasser is an 01. No mods except a flowmaster muffler. The hills around here are not mountains. Just gradual grades. Slows down to about 50-55 then you speed up again when it levels out. I tow a 33 foot Kountry Star.

palukie 11-16-2010, 09:33 PM Thanks for your info. I was just wondering how bad am I going to notice the difference between the 6.0 and the Diesel.
elvenhome21 11-16-2010, 10:10 PM MY 01 6.0 never gets above 11mpg even on the highway empty, but also never drops below 9 pulling the race car or a backhoe.
heymccall 11-16-2010, 10:14 PM I have several 6.0s.
The 2000 w/ 4L80E and 3.73 is an absolute dog.
The 2005 w/ 4L80E and 3.73 runs very well.
The 2009 w//6L90E and 3.73 is a real animal (and averages 13.0 mpg in the hands of a job site foreman; half idle, half job site running and half highway). And that's not a typo, as the OE rear tires were burnt off in 18k with two rotates.
I have an '09 3500 6.0 dually dump, but I haven't wrung it out yet.
DarylB 11-17-2010, 09:40 AM My father's 2007 Classic 6.0L reg cab 4wd is getting 10-11 in the city and maybe 14 on the highway w/ the 4.10 rear. So the blackbear tune is ~$250?
Duromax04 12-01-2010, 02:23 AM Don't waste your money on intakes. Also, don't expect an exhaust system to help much either other than sound better, which they do. The tune will help the most. 4.10s will help it pull better, but won't help mileage. There is always a tradeoff. Better pulling power, less MPG.
damutt 12-02-2010, 01:03 AM i drive a 2003 chevy 2500HD work truck cclb with a 6.2 4l80e and i only get 9mpg empty city highway , is that that bad
Oregonnovaguy 12-04-2010, 01:02 PM My '03 6.0 cc never, ever got better than 14 mpg. Ever. As noted above, don't bother with intake; helps top end power somewhat, but no improvement with mileage. K&N will trigger cel code, allows fine dust to pass thru. On the other hand, my 5.3 was a great engine, 19+ mpg hwy.

isnt that something how .7L, 200 or so more pounds, and an extra 400 rpm can make almost 7 mpg difference.
My sister has a 01 1500 ECSB 5.3 4x4 that gets 17-18 mpg yet my 01 2500hd ECSB 6.0 4x4 which is pretty much an identical trucks, cant do better then 11 on the best day. How the heck can there be that much of a difference. Then you get my dads truck 99 1500 4.8 2wd ECSB and he can get just over 20 mpg on strictly highway runs

The HD trucks are about 1,000lbs heavier, sit 2" higher and generally are geared lower than their 1/2 ton counterparts. Never mind the fact the 6.0 is way more detuned from the factory compared to the 5.3.
Isn't that something?
palukie 12-04-2010, 03:40 PM If our trucks are detuned then why isn't anything out there to help us out bringing this beast to life? How much will a tuner help out?

Most of the detune is to allow the use of regular (87 Octane) gas. Fleet users are funny that way:rolleyes:. You wanna feel a difference, try a full tank of premium. Most handheld tuner's simply write out the ability to run 87 (they advance the timing).
