I just rec'd a GM bulletin. Not a recall. Not a warranty notice.
Just a bulletin.

This is the Bulletin in a nut shall

Subject: - 670 Gear Box Power Steering Pump, P/S Performance Concerns.

Models:
2003-2006 Cadi Escalade, Escalade ESV, and EXT
2003-2006 Chevy (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=391969&page=2#) Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe
2003-2007 Chevy Silverado Classic
2007-2008 Chevy Silverado, Suburban (2500 series only)
2003-2007 GMC (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=391969&page=2#) Yukon, Yukon Denali, and XL
2003-2007 GMC Sierra Classic
2007-2008 GMC Sierra, Yukon XL (2500 series only)

Condition:

Some customers may comment on a lack of steering assist when stopped or during parking lot type maneuvers. (or backing a trailer):) A lack of steering assist could occur if the brakes are applied and turning the steering wheel with the vehicle stopped or during parking lot type maneuvers. This condition will go away or greatly improve once vehicle begins to move or is above parking lot speeds. This concern can be aggravated by worn tires, low tire air pressure, low power steering pump pressures, and tires larger than stock size.

Correction:

1:1 FOR 2500 AND 2500 VEHICLES ONLY - If diagnostics did not lead to any repairs, this concern is a normal operating characteristic. No further repairs should be performed. A field Product Report should be submitted - refer to Corp Bulletin Number 02-00-89-002D.

Thank goodness after a new pump and a new steering box mine is back to normal. Normal meaning I don't loose my power steering any more at idle.

The manager spoke of a possible upgrade if the problem persisted or becomes intolerable. Pump upgrade and a steering gear box upgrade to a 680 gear box around $1700.

Has anybody ever herd of an aftermarket steering upgrade instead of the GM upgrade?

Sorry No. Totally out of the question. My 07 Sil CCSB DMax is the BEST truck I have ever had. And True North Chev Olds is the best dealership. Lots of freebees and they go to bat for me with GM corp.
Hey there Nancy (goplay) you and your truck should go to mamby pamby town and trade it in on a Ford or Dodge. Try putting all those Mods and accessories on your new Ford or Dodge and see how far you get with your warranty. Quit crying and pouting online about your truck and do something about it.

I haven't heard of one specifically for the Duramax, but there are places that make aftermarket power steering pumps which could be made to work. Maybe try switching to synthetic fluid, Amsoil perhaps.

Agreed about both truck and dealership..for me too. But, I am experiencing multiple failures on the steering gear box as well. First one lasted a little over two years. Clunking noises, replaced under warranty. Second one lasted about 3 months, wanted to wander, loose, replaced under warranty. 3rd one lasted a little over a year and a half, started clunking, and the housing started to leak oil. Replaced.....under warranty. Now the recent one didn't even last a month, and it is "wandering" and right turns make a noise like a dry bearing. Dealership is going to replace it again, under warranty, and THIS time they are pulling all my records and having an engineer look at the situation, since this will now be the 5th box. Still original wheels, tires, etc, with right at 4 years and 40,000 miles on truck. Otherwise, VERY happy with the rig. Pulls 12,000 pound 5th wheel without knowing it's back there.:p:
