I have a 2007.5 Silverado Crew Cab 6.5ft bed LTZ Z-71. What exactly does the Z-71 add over a standard 4X4 LTZ?

I think it is an off road package, auto locking rear end, skid plates etc....

I was hoping it means a locking rear diff. I knew it added skid plates and was a suspension package. Is it taller than a normal 4X4?

I wouldn't think so.

Is a locking rear diff an option on our trucks, or only the gassers?

You probably have the eaton g80 locker. Most dmax/allison trucks do. Check the glove box for the g80 option code.

My 2003 CC LB D-max/Alli did not have a locker and it was something I wished it had.

As of 2005 You could Order a z71 in 2WD ... I don't know if it is the same in 2011

Z71 Off Road was 2wd
Z71 4x4 was obviously 4wd

those were the different packages

Just get in some gravel or grass and give it a little fuel. You will tell right quick if you have the G80. It will give a little clunk then you will start walking sideways and leave two perfect ruts.

I checked the glove box, it has the G80.

Or if you are in sand you will get a bunch of annoying axle hop.

It's salesman talk, suspension wise there is F all difference. Both have AWFUL shocks, they can say they're "tuned differently" but they're so weak it's impossible to tell. I'd pay the few hundred bucks for Z71 though as you get the skids and a better resale value. Make sure to fit Bilsteins right away.

I used to sell GM's back in the late 90's.

Z71 was called the off road suspension package. Which was firmer riding gas charged shocks and a Z71 sticker. For a few hundred dollars you got a rougher ride.

The off road skid plates is the NZZ package.

P.S. I will post a Intro when I get a chance later tonite... I have been just lurking lately...

For a couple hundred you get a shiny little sticker, skid plates, and some different shocks.

I would still order it but I would order it with decal delete and would still get rid of the crappy upgraded shocks for some real Bilsein's.

You can get the skid plates w/o Z71 as well as the locker, etc.

Shocks and stickers. Both can be changed later if needed.

Isn't the Z85 the trailering suspension package?

This ended up being the most accurate answer and the most helpfull.
