I'm far from an expert on this but I think the main reason to is so that you don't blow fuses if you accidentally short something while wiring stuff up. I suppose there is also the possibility of damaging expensive audio components if you happen to short something with the system "hot".

I never unhook my battery when doing audio mods. No problems to date in the past 4 -5 vehicles.

I very really unhook the battery every other week I'm helping some one with they’re stereo it seems.

use to be an installer and have installed hundreds of stereos and equipment and have never pulled the fuse
