I have a autometer pyrometer that appear's to be burning out either the probe or the wiring. It Is just over 2 years old and I have replaced the probe and wiring twice.
Has anyone got an idea why? Or is this a problem with the Autometer Pyrometer. I will not be replacing the wiring again, instead I will be looking to buy a different brand .... any suggestion's on which brand would be appreciated

Why not buy a higher grade thermocouple from McMaster-Carr? Should be just a standard K-style probe.

Same here, I have gone through 3 autometer probes in the last 2 years:mad:

Hmmm....I've got ISSPRO gauges and pyrometer has had no issues since I installed it 5 years ago.

I just installed an autometer probe yesterday. I am somewhat concerned about the lenght of the probe. Fairly long compared to others I've seen. The kit came with a weld on bung if used would take it out another 1/2 inch. Looks like a 1/2 inch before it would hit the other side of the manifold. Dont know that I like that much probe inserted into the manifold?

I also noticed the crimps on the wire to run up to the guages were CRAP!!!
Had to solder them, very poor crimp job.

We shall see...

We had to use a lathe and make a custom fitting to get the pyro at the right depth. With that stupid crimp fitting from Auto Meter, the fitting would bottom out against the back side of the exhaust manifold.

Not sure why they'd use a crimp fitting instead of a compression like all the race data loggers use.

Big Buford. I just installed Autometer Sport Comp ll's, and I noticed the same thing, Bad crimps. I sent in one Pyrometer and noticed the crimp was crap on the replacement meter. I like the meter's looks however they really need to upscale on the crimps for me to consider them again in the future.

Just an FYI - you should not solder the wiring crimps on a thermocouple. You are introducing additional metals to the dissimilar metal characteristics that generate the voltage being sensed, and that will alter the output. In other words, it hurts the accuracy!

Thermocouple probes for pyrometers should be positioned such that the probe tip is in the middle of the tube/manifold flow.
