I bought a 06 crew cab with the lly with 50k miles on it. I put on an airaid cold air intake on it and my mpg's dropped can anyone help to explain why and how to get more mileage out of my truck.

thanks

Really the only thing to gain mileage is a programmer like Edge, PPE, Quad, or others. As to the drop I do not know but probably has a different effect on the MAF sensor. A change of airflow across it.

Tell us about your truck - fill out your signature - and maybe we can offer some feedback. There are plenty of things that can kill mileage - larger wheels/tires, aerodynamics, etc. My truck - as listed in my sig - running the Predator economy tune routinely sees above 22 mpg unloaded on the highway. Water/meth injection is an easy way to bump your mileage up pretty significantly, but that'll cost you ~$700.

As Randy stated running a good quality tuner and driving conservatively will net you 20-23mpg, i am willing to bet the aftermarket airfilter is more restrictive than stock. I found running a K/N actually restricted airflow so both of my trucks are back to stock air filters.

Keep the shifts below 2K RPM (driving like granny). Keep as small as tires as your comfortable on it. Drive 70 or below on the highway. Don't hot rod around town. My truck is stock including the tire sizes and I can make 22MPG on the highway and probably close to 17 around town summer fuel. Mixed mileage is usually around the 18's.

Don't know why folks use the cold air intakes except if your racing and are looking for 10ths of seconds of difference. The turbo is just compressing and heating the air anyways and 10 degrees of temp difference or even 30 degrees doesn't matter one bit.

Because the M.A.F.'s on the lly/lbz trucks are sensitive, and it messes up my turbo after each shifts, blows smoke, and the turbo dont spool till 5-8 seconds after the shift. put the stock filter back in. Fixed.

Besides driving 60, with 245's, and baby-ing it, the opinion is a tuner. Bought a 07classic which replaced my 02lb7. Same setup, cc sb, DPN tow mirrors, 265michelins. the 02 had a 500# ranch hand front replacement on it. Would average driving 17.5-18.5 mixed driving. While I drove it, I also didn't dog it. 68-72 on the highway.

This truck has never seen over 15mpg (hand calculated). It currently has 50k on it, and I know the previous owner very well (father in law) and he bemoaned the fuel efficiency (or lack thereof). It still has 50k left on the warranty. I am not opposed to adding a chip or a tuner, I am just concerned about voiding the warranty. My friend who is a GM dealer service manager tells me that GM is coming down hard on them about chips/mods/etc. and making it tough if there is a warranty issue.

How do you guys handle this? Thoughts, opinions, etc.

If the odometer/speedometer has not been corrected for the 265 tires it will read lower mileage. You will also lose 1 1/2 or 2 mpg by installing the 265's in place of the stock 245's.

I have a stock GM turbo to muffler pipe from my 2002 duramax that I removed when I added 4" MBRP exhaust. The 02 was prior to the cat's on a diesel. I've considered that move, and I don't live in a emissions testing county in the state, and I'm not too concerned about getting it to pass inspection. I am just leary of it voiding my warranty.

X2 on the many things addressed by Randy and others. 265's will definitely throw off your mpg as well as your speedometer & odometer if not recalibrated.

Tire pressure also has huge effect.

..at 50k that thing is not even broke in. Pull hard: ie as in a 12,000lb 5th wheel up a 35 mile long 8% grade 5 or 6 times doing 75mph..in other words, work it hard....then put a tuner on it or get it tuned with EFI live. For the record, at ~70 I get 17.5-19 highway (Im running 275 BFG's AT/ko) - with Michelin LTX 265's, I can easily get 20-21 at same speeds / conditions.
