I have been pondering weather or not to start investing into a unit to make it. The reason I haven't is because I haven't been able to lock down a reliable source of veggie oil. Well now I found it. It's brand new out of the barrel. I have to pay but wonder what everyones input is. I would be paying $1.10-$1.50/kilogram. About $1-$1.25/pound. Will using brand new oil save me on the other chemicals needed or should I just keep looking for a place to get it for free?

If you can not get it for free then figure out what your cost will be for the oil and the other chemicals and decide if its worth that to you.Methanol is anywhere from 2.70 to 3.20 a gallon now and sodium hydroxide is about 65.00 per 50 pound bag,KOH is a lot more if you go that route.Figure your cost with the oil and see if you save any money, myself it would have to be free to be worth it.:)

but that still doesn't answer my question. how much less chemicals do you use with new oil?

You'll be using less catalyst. Same amount of methanol though...about 10 gallons per 50 gallons of oil.
You'll want to titrate your new oil to see how much catalyst you need. Check out www.utahbiodieselsupply.com for videos and tutorials on titrating and chemicals.

thanx for the info. So from what I have read I'm better off to wait for used oil. The savings on using new is pretty much useless. unless I sell the new oil to people with a contract stating I get the oil back free of charge. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm to do or not to do.

New VO is like Crude Oil its a commodity As soon as demand goes up so does the price. I would find used VO. IMHO
Good Luck

Check with firehouses, granges, vfw's masonic lodges then pizza places, mom n pop burger joints, and on up to the bigger stuff. You'll find that the granges, firehouses, lodges, use the oil once then ususally throw it back into the original container and in the dumpster. I have several hundred gallons to pick up Monday of 1 time used oil from all the oyster and ham dinners that went on yesterday.
