: Mbrp Or Banks?
Velocity Mark 08-01-2005, 03:11 PM Which is better all around for the money the MBRP or the Banks? I see a lot of post on the MBRP and not to many on the Banks is there a reason. I have a 100% stock 05lly and am not looking to build a race truck, just improve my MPG. and add a little more power for towing.
Mark_my_word 08-01-2005, 03:23 PM I doubt there is a real difference between the two. I've got the MBRP. Mine is stock right now except for thr MBRP 4". You will notice little or no difference after doing the exhaust. Mine is with the cat delete so if there is a difference I would have noticed it more. My impression after I added the exhaust was that the turbo spooled up a little quicker. There may have been a very small mileage improvement but it was not noticeable. Same with horsepower.
If you get rid of the cat the biggest improvement you will see if you tow is the egt reduction. Without removing teh cat your egt reduction will be much less. If you aren not removing teh cat and don't plan on adding a chip or tuner later you are not going to see much benefit from just the exhaust. Certainly not a noticealbe boost in hp.
Mark_my_word 08-01-2005, 03:24 PM Of course, it will be louder, expecially if you take off the cat and muffler....
Mark Craig 08-01-2005, 03:33 PM Velocity Mark,
The best value is MBRP, based on features and price. I would suggest you get the system as a cat back and then see what you think of the sound and EGT drop. On some of the LLY trucks if you drop the cat you'll get a check engine light and then have to get the Finger Stick and an EGR plate. If with the cat back you get enough EGT drop then you don't have to worry with the other mods etc. Call us if you have any questions we will be glad to help you.

JhnZ71 08-01-2005, 04:25 PM I have a buddy with the MBRP, and I have the Banks. His is louder and I think it sounds better...but it does drone more than mine considerabally on the highway.
There both very high quality systems, but the banks is definately a quieter system
turbo lcc 08-01-2005, 04:33 PM I have MBRP and like the setup.. BUT...
My kit had 3" clamps in it and I just helped a buddy put MBRP on his truck and the flanges were flared wrong on it. So with that I have seen 2 for 2 MBRP systems that need extra parts to work. I would go with Banks if I were you.
Velocity Mark 08-01-2005, 05:23 PM Another ? along the same line, probably stupid so don't hammer me to bad I'm new here. Whats the dif between the 304SS and the 409SS on the MBRP besides the price?
I do also plan on adding the Edge with attitude later, I'm working in stages.

The difference is 304SS looks polished & doesn't fade out to bad & 406SS looks like an aluminium exhaust after awhile, although it doesn't deterioate like alum.
Maxed 08-02-2005, 11:53 AM After much research I ended up going with the MBRP 4" Cool Duals T-409 with the straight cut 5" tips. I did not remove the cat and I have no drone. I took the family up to Arkansas pulling my 5th which weighs in around 12k and hardly noticed any increase in exhaust noise. I did pull about .5 mpg better than the same trip last weekend with stock exhaust.
The system looks and sounds great...
However, I was disapponited with the directions and I feel the fit could have been much better. The driver side pipe barely clears the shock boot and no matter what I did the brake lines rested on the exhaust. I am going to take my truck to a local exhaust guy to see if he can straighten things out. If I had a do-over I would have went with the single exhaust.

watersampler 08-02-2005, 02:54 PM does the single exhaust have a better fit or what ? i really want the dual exhaust but if it doen't fit that good i will get the single exhaust.
Mark Craig 08-02-2005, 03:48 PM Velocity Mark,
The 409 and the 304 are both polished stainless from the mill, the 409 is a magnetic material and will over time get brown /gray spots on it, it will function and last a long time just won't stay pretty etc. The stock systems are 409 by the way. The 304 is a non magnetic stainless that contains a lot of nickel and chromium, therby the higher price, it will basically stay just like it is out of the box for longer than any of us care to think/worry about it, but it costs more. If you want the best and you want it to stay shiny, get 304, if you want the best and don't worry about discoloration get the 409, if you want, if you want a great value get the aluminized MBRP's!
If I confused you just call us.

Mark Craig 08-02-2005, 03:50 PM watersampler,
The single system is easier to install just because it has less to do to be installed, the fit and finish on either system is the same, very good and high quality etc. Duals are very good looking and make your truck look different than the other zillions out there, plus you can smoke out the ricers from both sides when you want to!

dh515 08-03-2005, 12:49 AM I also have the MBRP Cool duals set up. For once, I went with my gut instinct regarding "easy bolt on" instructions and had an RV shop install it. These guys had a hell of a time putting this system on and that was with a hoist and all the right tools. I could have just seen myself on my back crawling around trying to get everything lined up right.
:badidea:
Mine also is very close to the rear shock on the driver's side with the brake lines so close that the owner of the RV shop told me to get some heat shielding for the brake lines. Other than that, I'm happy with the system. Not much louder than stock if at all which was what I wanted ( I still have the cat) and it looks great.
Mark Craig 08-03-2005, 12:23 PM dh515,
Yep the alignment to get the two tail pipes lined up and looking good is a PITA, but looks great when you get it done. I have done some installs by myself and I just c clamp a jack stand with one tail pipe just like I want it and then I can set the other to match, lots easier with help though!!

ifishinxs 08-04-2005, 12:34 AM I just installed my MBRP last week...The hardest part was getting the old system out..My 10yr old son and I managed to get the old system out in about an hour in one piece...The New MBRP sytem lined right up and only took about 30 minutes to install..I noticed a slight increase in throttle response and the system sounds great on the outside where it should, and no noticable increase in sound in the cab...I just towed my boat to San Diego and noticed a difference in power pulling the hills..I just drove my 36 mile commute and noticed a slight increase in mileage as well...Great system IMHO.
Bakatare 08-04-2005, 01:30 AM Mark, why are the duels out to the side? I had a 96 1500 silverado with duel flowmaster going to the rear I liked.

1) Yeah, MBRP could do a better job with the directions, if youre not "meckanikally inclined" it gets confusing, especially which clamps to use where. Lots of trial and error. They should also incorporate 3 inch band clamps in their kit. It would add some $$ in the end, but add to their quality.
2) The brake line issue with the duals was solved long ago. See post #31 of Tony's MBRP review: http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10846&page=2&pp=20 for your solution. This should also be written into MBRP's instructions.
Mark Craig 08-04-2005, 11:09 AM Bakatare,
Most folks that invest in an exhaust also add a programmer of module for more HP, and with that comes some smoke which will really UGLY up a trailer or choke a horse if you tow anything etc. So that's the reason they are out to the side, as well as trying to get 4 inch tubes and maybe tips to bend around hitches, spare tires etc is gonna be tough too!

Maxed 08-04-2005, 11:30 AM Thanks for the link TB, I will give that a try this weekend.

Chuck1 08-04-2005, 12:04 PM Just installed my MBRP 409 single on Monday. Getting the stock exhaust out was the toughest part for sure. I recommend jacking up the passenger side, that is what I ended up doing in order to get the stocker out. Other than that it went really well, and it looks, sounds, and performs great. :ro)
brianteel 08-27-2005, 08:35 PM ok so read this and this is what i got:
The difference between Banks and MBRP is sound.
now what else is different besides that
size?
what is included in the kit?
price?
also i got out of this is that the exhaust does nothing unless you have a chip in there. Is that true too.
DSTRBD 08-27-2005, 08:47 PM I believe MBRP is cheaper by quite a bit.
The exhaust will help with or without a chip. Its purpose is to help lower egt's which it does a great job of. The LLY Duramax runs very hot from the factory so opening up the exhaust flow helps quite a bit. Hope this helps.
