: Southbend dual disk or triple disk?
Zfdmax 10-27-2010, 10:46 AM I am getting ready to order a new clutch kit. I am
Just looking for some input on the differences and pros/cons of either a sbc triple ceramic or a sbc double feramic. Any suggestions Are appreciated!
01Duramax6spd 10-27-2010, 03:05 PM What do you plan to do with it? I wouldn't suggest a triple unless you're sledpulling a lot. They can be driven daily but I don't suggest it. I love my triple and do drive it some but I don't let too many other people drive it.

Zfdmax 10-27-2010, 07:22 PM It will be a daily driver and I will sledpull in my area and dragrace occasionally. I am kinda rough on the old girl, haha. She doesn't get any slack.
tysmith 10-27-2010, 07:30 PM I daily drive a strapped dual disk, and I wouldn't have anything else. Quiet and smooth... Never having driven a triple, I can't say for sure, but don't think I would want to daily drive it.
Zfdmax 10-27-2010, 07:33 PM What about the triple makes you not want to drive it everyday?
irogers 10-27-2010, 07:46 PM I also have a DD. And it's a big enough pain in the ass to drive in the city with stop and go traffic. From what I've heard of the tripple disc unless your truck is a dedicated puller/racer your better off with the DD. If your not going to be throwing more than 600 hp or 1100 ft/lb you should be fine with the dd
Zfdmax 10-27-2010, 09:35 PM I think when my truck gets tuned next week, the guys say with nicks tune from duramaxtuner.com will put my truck over 1,000 ft lbs
Zfdmax 10-27-2010, 09:37 PM My buddy has an 02 dmax zf with a sbc dd feramic. The clutch has the same pedal pressure as my stock clutch.
01Duramax6spd 10-28-2010, 10:20 AM They aren't real driver friendly. You can't ease the clutch out per say. It enguages and disenguages within about 1-2" of peddle travel so it's either in or out. Mine is a sintered iron triple with a 4200lb weighted presure plate. You sure can't race with a triple disc. If you rush them you'll just grind gears .

Sounpopular 10-28-2010, 11:13 AM I hear "strapped dd" a lot. Whats the difference between a normal sb dd and a strapped dd?
I have a sb dd and if a triple is even rougher engagement, driving it as a daily driver especially if you do a lot of city driving would not be very enjoyable.
Zfdmax 10-28-2010, 02:31 PM Yea I don't know for sure what a "strapped" dd is either?
well my mechanic showed me what makes it "strapped" ... but I aint real sure how to describe it. I'll try anyway- basically it's a "strap" of steel(?) bout 3" long, 1/2" wide?, maybe 3 of them(?) that holds something together... I forget exactly what tho. could be clutch disks to clutch "housing"? ..yea I'll just stop.
I may be able to get pictures tonight of my wore out south bend triple disk if someone wants to see it... I remember seeing the "straps" on it. just didn't pay that much attention.
tysmith 10-29-2010, 09:36 AM Strapping refers to strapping the floater to the actual flywheel. Gets rid of the noise so it sounds like a single disk. On South Bend flywheels, each lug of the floater gets strapped, so three in total.
06SIXSPEEDMANUAL 10-29-2010, 07:04 PM For daily driving my triple disc isn't terrible. It's not the choice for drag racing tho, I can back kyle up on that. Mine will grind too if I try and rush it
Zfdmax 10-29-2010, 07:23 PM Do any of you guys know Caleb? He has the 05lly I think it's one of the fastest zfs in the country! He suggested a triple. He says you can shift much faster!
01Duramax6spd 10-29-2010, 10:25 PM We all know Caleb . He must have a different triple than we do cause there is no way to rush a weighted one like mine. I could shift very very fast with my dual disc and my short throw shifter. I was always messing with fast cars but now there is no point :(.

Zfdmax 10-30-2010, 02:34 AM What's your time 01duramax6sp?
01Duramax6spd 10-30-2010, 09:14 AM I've never been to a track. Not really my thing :(. I sledpull :D.
What's your time 01duramax6sp?
Zfdmax 10-30-2010, 05:32 PM Ok, well I was just following what Caleb said about that triple. He has one of the fastest trucks and he uses a triple. Why wouldn't he use a double if he could cut down even more time?
skeeter1486 10-30-2010, 07:56 PM Just out of curiosity, as I will be making this purchase in the near future, does anyone know if getting a DD strapped costs any extra?
01Duramax6spd 10-30-2010, 08:39 PM A dual disc probably won't hold the power Caleb is making. My guess is he had a non-weighted triple that's possibly ceramic.
Mine is a purpose build pulling clutch and not really ment to be driven daily.

Zfdmax 10-31-2010, 02:17 AM I am looking at a triple ceramic or a double feramic.
01Duramax6spd 10-31-2010, 10:05 AM Best bet is to call Peter or Brian at SBC and tell them what you are going to do with it.
I am looking at a triple ceramic or a double feramic.
Zfdmax 10-31-2010, 02:38 PM Alright i will be sure to do that! Thanks all of you for your suggestions and answers to my questions!
Zfdmax 11-07-2010, 01:17 AM Caleb only makes around 700 rwhp at his wheels from what he told me. He has a triple. Why would the southbend dd feramics be rated At 750 if they wouldn't hold up to it?
Zfdmax 11-07-2010, 01:20 AM I did talk to Peter at southbend, and told him what i wanted to do with my truck. I told him that I will sledpull, dragrace, and daily drive it. He recommended me a spring loaded ferAmic button dual disk
