: I just can't decide.
C5vette 10-21-2010, 09:18 PM My dodge now has 130k on the clock and I'm starting to get the itch for a new truck. My truck has been great and at least 100k of these miles are towing. I haven't replaced so much as a light bulb. I really want to try a g, or ford this time though but I can't decide between the two. I like the dmax better as a motor but I like the ford interior better and the exterior is a toss up since gm finally put decent sized wheels on these trucks.
Does gm offer the power inverter in the dash like ford and dodge.
For you guys that are not brand loyal.....when you go to buy a truck is it whichever motor you like best or which truck you like best?
The dodge is out because I'm really not a big fan of the new styling and I feel like they're down on power compared to the others.
One more thing. Could I get a 2500 or 3500 srw with the luxury interior but with cloth. And could I still get the 20's on that truck?
I guess the recent powerstroke issues are scaring me concerning the ford. I don't want to end up with a lemon. Do you guys think the lml will be as reliable as my 5.9?
CheddarWedge 10-21-2010, 10:33 PM I too am coming over from a Dodge, 08 2500 6.7 Cummins Quad Cab 4X4 Long Bed, 114k when I upgraded. I was needing payload and towing numbers much higher than my 2500 offered. I like you had almost no issues, 3 times I had to go in for the emissions cleaning but it was a solid truck otherwise. My one and the biggest reason for going with a GMC over a Ford was the new engine and new tranny in the Fords, both of which are having issues. Excessive regens, trannies getting stuck in gears or loosing all power thru the transmission, some not all. I watched it for months and there seems to be lots of issues, some more than others but enough to keep me from dropping 55k on a garage ornament. I wanted a smoother ride and I have to say the GMC I got is much smoother than the old Dodge, even being a 3500 Dually. Duramax and Allison are pretty dang smooth and power is amazing compared to what I had, I'm dying to pull something. I am just cresting my break in so I will pour the heat to her this weekend but I am very impressed so far. The cab is smaller than the Ford and the electronics are not anywhere near what Ford has in theirs, that being said the truck I got has Nav and the DIC does more than I could imagined, coupled with OnStar it is a great system, just not as flashy. Mine doesn't have a power inverter, not sure what I would use it for, don't think it is an option but I could be wrong. Not sure about the luxury with cloth either, I got an SLT because it came loaded the way I wanted it and had just arrived at the lot so no chance to have people out "Checking the Power". I am not a brand loyalist and buy to fit me and my family. I'm a Rancher and travel a lot between ranches with heavy loads ranging from livestock to equipment and make long trips to different events around Texas and Oklahoma. We have a 38' 5er and go camping all over. So I want comfort and reliability and for me that was the GMC.
C5vette 10-21-2010, 10:48 PM Thanks man, that's the kind of info I'm looking for. I don't know if I want leather or not because I'll just tear it up getting in and out all day. With the ford you can get the full center console with the cloth interior. Not sure about the chevy though.
EricM 10-21-2010, 11:33 PM Thanks man, that's the kind of info I'm looking for. I don't know if I want leather or not because I'll just tear it up getting in and out all day. With the ford you can get the full center console with the cloth interior. Not sure about the chevy though.
You can get cloth buckets with a console on the Chevy (ext. and crew cabs only), but they come with the "pure pickup" dash, not the "low & forward" SUV dash. Option code A95.
TrevorD 10-22-2010, 08:06 AM I didn't consider the Dodge when I purchased, but I did go look at the Ford. I ruled it out when I looked at a Lariat that had a $60,000 sticker, and the center of the seats looked like someone threw up on them. I would've liked a King Ranch, but I was not willing to pay $65000 for a truck! I did also consider the fact that the Ford has a new, unproven engine. I've put 12000 miles on my truck in the 3 months that I've had it, and I don't regret it one bit. The truck has been nothing but awesome, and over half of these miles have been with a 30' or 48' trailer in tow. I do think the Ford layout for interior is really nice, and my only big complaint about GM's truck is a lack of legroom in the back seat. I'll keep this truck until GM releases a redesigned interior and hopefully a larger back seat. :)
Gman66 10-24-2010, 11:24 PM I bought a 2011 Ford F-350 and I love it to death......no issues whatsoever with 6000mi on the clock....also love my duramax so i guess i'm really no help here lol.....I hope this 6.7 proves to be a great engine....I have a dually and it rides like a cadillac.....
Sixshooter45 10-25-2010, 09:58 AM I as well just bought my first GM product. I am also coming from a Cummins I have had no trouble with whatsoever. Im sure glad I did, I absolutely love the Duramax. I looked at the new dodges and fords too but the GMC won me over. The engine power is amazing. I ruled out the dodge right off the bat. I think the 6.7 is a good motor, but its no 5.9. And i know its trivial but I just don't like the way the ford sounded, too toy-like for me. Again sound makes no difference just something that turned me off. I have shy of 3k on the GMC so I cant speak of longevity or service but it has been flawless so far. In short, from what I know so far I would recommend these vehicles to anyone looking for a a HD truck. Good luck in your search
willford 10-27-2010, 09:10 PM Well I went the other way, I bought my first Dodge, after owning 2 D/A's a 01 and 03. Had numerous trips back the the dealership for both, mostly warranty items but other things that were not covered. My 03 had the injectors replaced twice, so I felt a bit jaded towards GM this time around, I have a 08 Acadia that has had 2 transmissions in it under 60,000 miles. Which replaced a Envoy that the transmission went out. So far my company Chevy Van is going strong. So I have invested $$$ over the years in GM.
I do think GM has made serious improvements to their Heavy Duties, beefing up the IFS is a good thing, while it has a superior ride compared to a straight axle, durability is another thing. So far I could not be happier with my Dodge, the Laramie interior is the best out there, Ford went space age, and GM nice layout but still stuck using hard plastic dashs they need to add better materials. All this is subjective and not meant to dog anybodys ride, sure both Ford and GM have the better HP's Torque numbers, its not the one who is the fastest up the hills that wins, its the one who can drive up the most hills ,,,,,aka Durability.
I do think the Allison was a smoother tranny, and the XM didn't cut out as easily as the Dodge system. Looked at Ford and like most people say the first year engine hasn't been had such a great track record in the past, but time will tell so far they seem to have done a good job except for the MPG hype of mid 20's even maybe 30, which all turned out to be BS. Ford has alot riding on this engine. Which is why I went Cummins this time around, its nice to be able to actually see it. In the End all 3 have vastly improved other then the Smog which is another plus for the Dodge.
C5vette 10-27-2010, 11:26 PM I'm glad to hear you like the new dodge willford. The styling of the new ones is growing on me and I do like the new mega.
I think I'm leaning towards a chevy but I'm really kinda disappointed in the layouts they offer. I really want the low and forward dash with the cloth buckets but that's not available. It also seems like every time I find one I like it doesn't have something I want. Like the back up camera and rear park assist. Seems like every truck I like is missing those and the ones I don't like have em. I'm finding that whoever orders these trucks for the dealers doesn't know what they're doing in most cases.
I'm really just trying to decide where I will get the most truck for my money.
I've been trying to think if all 3 trucks were offered with my 5.9 which truck I would buy. I think it would be the ford. That tells me I like the ford the best but their recent history with diesels scares me. Plus I come from a gm family who use dodge for their diesel trucks so I would get hammered if I bought a ford and it had problems. Anyway just thinking out loud.
csu1986 10-28-2010, 02:04 AM Okay, here goes,
I work for GM and maybe that skews my view a little so i am going to try to explain why you should go with a Duramax over everything else.... 1st off warranty.... GM has a 3 year 36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty just like all the other guys! But.. they also have a 5 year/ 100,000 mile power-train warranty ( which covers any internally lubricated items) compared to fords 5year/60k mile warranty. 2nd, do you really want to consider a manufacture (ford) that has changed their block 4 times in the last 10 years (actually 8)???? 3rdly, do you really want a tranny that has a plastic over drive gear and a plastic oil pan?????? Fourthly, dive them... Ford recently issued a recall to all purchasers of a new 6.7 for a re-program (chipping the engine) so it could beat (or compete with the GM) and then backed away from the motor trend challenge to show their numbers??? I hope this helps!!!!!!
C5 you have a tough choice to make, bottom line is that all three are building quality trucks. The Ram numbers are lower but when comes to towing it compares and even is favored in some tests. The EB on the Ram is the better of the bunch and much more room in the rear seat with the MC. I would be happy with any of them right now. Good Luck
