Going to change the rear end oil in my 06 2500 HD duramax. Anyone know the capacity?

Thanks

I just changed mine a few weeks ago, I couldn't find a number anywhere telling me how much i need to put in there. So just eye balled it and guessed that it would take 4qts. Well i bought 4qts of mobil1 full synthetic and it took all four to fell up my 07 2500 HD classic with the 11.5in 14 bolt. That thing is masive:D

Do the covers use a gasket or just use gasket maker?

I used RTV black, going to need quit a bit as the cover is so big. Make sure you fill to the drain plug when your done and wait about an hour after you put the cover on to let the RTV dry if you don't want it to leak.

You shouldn't even have to pull the cover unless you're wanting to do an inspection. the 11.5 has a drainplug in the bottom of the casting.

Ditto on the drain plug. Use a gasket for best results if you pull the cover

Had my 04 serviced and is now leaking out the drain plug hole. Was there a washer on it? Mine has none.

Thanks

I did mine a few months ago before I deployed. Took 4 quarts of Royal Purple. (stuff is expensive.)

I didn't have any on mine but i noticed when i took it off that there was a small amount of RTV on there so i put some on when i put the drain plug back in.

The best thing you can do if you used expansive gear oil is to go to autoparts/walmart and buy a new clean drain pan and let it drain on to that then reinstall the drain plug with some RTV and pore the gear oil back inside.

Time to change it again then  My RP had 40k on it and looked as bad as the OE stuff. Nothing but Amsoil from now on.
