just like the title says i am looking at swaping in a zf6, im looking at making my truck a super street truck, will my transfer case from the ally bolt up to the zf6, what needs to be done in reference to wiring, i also tosed the idea around with throwing in a nv4500 too

I'd be interested in knowing this to, because when my tranny does go I would like to swap to a manual if its not to intimidating of a project.

It'll bolt up to the t-case,just have to get the tuning figured out. You'll need an 06 LLY/ZF6 file I believe. I think you just zip the wires from the trans to the frame rail after turning them off with EFI Live. Couple guys have done it already on older trucks. I love my ZF for sledpulling.

Has anyone ever made a build thread for this? It would be really cool if there was so you could see exactly how they did it

i dont have any worries about tunning idaho rod is a great tunner, im just tring to figure out if the swap would be worh the time, and expence i know i will need a clutch pedal, different drive shafts, do i need a different trans crossmember or will that still work,

The front driveshaft is the same cause the one in my 3500 is from an Ally truck and I think the rear is the same length except the ZF trucks use 1480 style u-joints instead of 1410 style u-joints like the Ally trucks. I'd have to compare my dads crossmember to the ones in my ZF trucks but they sure look similar. The peddle, master cylinder and slave are the main things you need. GM can supply them or you can hunt for them at a salvage yard.

I need to hear from expert sources if the Allison 3000 would fit our 1 tons from a Kodiak. As these interchange subjects have gone it always gets passed over. That would seem like a tougher tranny with more pulling and building capabilities but I guess a guy like Mike L. or other Alli builders could actually advise on it up or down. The manuals have a SAE 3 bellhousing on the Duramax I believe I read too and that fits some other manuals in the larger trucks that come with more strength but fit and functions I wish it would be explained for other conversion trucks like if a F350 was Maxed up or older trucks that many like to put new drive train parts in.

The 5500's that have the heavier GVW have a Ally 2200 and it's basically the exact same tranny as a 1000 just has a bigger park pawl {s/p}. I believe all Allisons in the 4500/5500's have a bellhousing similar to a Cummins style setup. The Ally 3000 may be avaliable in the 6500+ Kodiaks but I'm not familiar with those.

wow this swap seems to be ALOT easer than i orignaly thought, if i was to buy a new zf6 that i can get for around 1800 to 2000 i think i might be able to do this whole swap for under 4000 maybe even closer to 3 grand all i would need to get would be a pedel im sure i can even make the crossmember fit if i had too, figure 2k for the trans, 1000 for the clutch and mastercylinder and a grand for pedel and other little stuff i would need

if u were to use your stock transfercase they y would the u joins be different??

If you're sledpulling and going to the class above work stock I'd buy a SBC triple disc and they run way north of $1000  I bought a complete 01
D-Max donor truck for less than you're talking for parts alone so you might look around a bit before buying parts .

The t-case doesn't have any u-joints but you're right you would have all the same driveline so you'd be fine fitment wise.

Ya I'll be close to 800+hp I thought a SB tripple disk were like 1200 and yes that's what I am tring to do is find a doner truck there hard to come by tho

I think a triple would be quiet a bit more then that! I just put in a dual disk and I wish it was $1200...... My truck had a ally originally in it and my friend (he owned the truck until he had to sell it due to health reasons) put the zf6 in. If i recall correctly, the t-case (floor shift) and all the driveshafts are still the same. I think the only thing you guys are leaving out is the gauge cluster. Don't know if you must change it out or not.

you mention floor shift T-case. Can the electric t-case be used?

Im doing the same swap with my lbz, getting the trans this week i hope. I was planning on doing a build thred.

To do swap it shouldnt cost anymore then a fully built ally. If you going to get crazy with your truck a NV4500 maybe the way, with may tranfer case optoins and you can get custom gears. Also there not as hard to find.

When my ally goes, I want to do this swap also. Something about a manual 6 speed trans diesel just turns me on. I've always enjoyed row'n the gears.

If your thinking about it with a LMM not going to work, only way would be to convert it to a LBZ or somthing and find a way to mount the peddle and stuff

i have done this conversion in my 06 lbz just got it done like 2 months ago only thing i have no cruise cuz the tcm doesnt know the tranny is in drive so i need to figure out if i can tie a few wires together on the harness to "trick it".. but on the Lbz u just need the clutch, master cylnder, pedal, trans, and trans to t-case gasket. the driveshafts are all the same and the cross member very east conversion ... except when u have to pull ur tranny out 3 times cuz of balance issues and end up with a custom balanced flywheel off my flexplate... other than that issue.. pretty simple hardest part...the clutch pedal= nightmare.. good luck pm me for my number if u have any questions ill try to help all i can

My cousin is currently in the process of this build, the floor pan does seem to be marked for the shifter but all in all if it wasn't for the clutch pedal assembly its not a bad idea.

Not to get off the subject too far,but have anyone ever heard of swapping the NV4500 5 speed for the zf6 six speed? If I ever had problems with mine, id like to get a six speed. Did not know if it would bolt up to the 6.0 or not...

How did you turn the tranny off?

OS from a ZF6 truck

use the os system from a LBZ manual .. its online in the tune library. u will need efilive though. but really u dont have to have it except for the starting issue but that could be resolved by just jumping a couple wires if u dont have efilive.
