Guys: I have seen so many threads concerning getting cool air versus hot air to the 6.5. I am taking out the snorkel. My big question is, why won't just opening up the air box like those mods performed on the d-max work on the 6.5??? The air box on the 6.5 has plenty surface area to swiss cheese or cut out for increased flow. If this is done on the grill side like on the d-max will the intake air be too hot??? Help, I don't wont to screw up my stock air by doing something wrong.

Thanks, HOOKY:help:

Hooky go to Kennedy web site his FAQs has info how to mod early model GMs

Take a minute to update your sig line per welcome note sticky, so we know what truck we are talking about/advising you on, later model GMs don't have a snorkle to be removed for better airflow.

If you are a L56 engined truck there is an intake mod that will also benefit your airflow to consider check web link in my sig or again at Kennedy's site.

Also hot underhood air on a DMAX isn't as critical, they are intercooled engines which lowers IAT, unless you install one of your own anything that adds heat to a 6.5 such as hot under hood air with a swiss cheese air box is bad Ju-Ju.

Thanks TurbineDoc.

As for the update to the signature line, what do I need to do and how. I haven't been viewing this website long but that is the second time someone suggested that.

Again, thanks.

it is with the d-max as well. Some new discoveries lately with just how poor the intercooler is performing, especially in severe tow environments. Just FYI if you weren't following, off topic here.

Take a minute to update your sig line per welcome note sticky, . 5 or so sticky notes just to the top of the 6.5 forum threads FAQ is a sticky also

TurbineDoc: I went to Kennedy's site and printed up pics of airbox mods. My 95, 6.5 did not have have the snorkel in the side of the fender as shown on Kennedy's site. It does have a plastic, L-shaped air diversion attachment in front of the passenger-side battery that diverts air from directly behind the passenger-side park/turn signal light to the right side fender wall. My question is, should I leave this in place??? Looks like it might force cooler air to that air space where the snorkel should have been located. I opened up the airbox intake as per Kennedy's recommendations, just not sure about the effectiveness or restrictions of this L-shaped air diversion device. Any thoughts???

Leave it in place, the snorkle gets removed as it necked down area available to breathe thru. Remember the key to making power in a Diesel is airflow, by either mechanical advantage (Turbo) or simply enhancing ability of the engine to scavenge air on it's own, and also improving ability to dispose of waste gasses. Problem with turbos is if sized improperly they hinder & help at same time. If you haven't done so yet visit the Banks web site, some very informative information there in tech talk tab about turbos & Diesels in general.

Thanks for telling us anyway as a lot of us have been thinking of squeezing a Dmax intercooler in our trucks. Have to rethink that now

Any intercooler is an improvement on a non intercooled 6.5L

I am not dissuading you from doing that, it is just tough to pull off well. He is right intercooling is a wonderful thing. What we are finding in the D-max is that it wasn't well executed by GM. With a few improvements to the stack, it works beautifully. Just make sure you have good air flow across it, that is the elusive part

remove it

Take out the lower light, there´s a screw behind that you need to remove to get the plastic out. It comes out to the front, if I recall it right. It makes for an amazing improvement, and you can reinstall it anytime if it doesn´t.

Removing the snorkle: Does it come out from behind the headlight? I looked and couldn't figure out where to get it out from. I am sure it is in there, but I just couldn't figure out where to pull it out at.

Pics or diagrams would help (I'm kinda slow).

Well, take the lower light (blinker, DRL, not the headlight) out, that´s 4 screws only. Take the ,bulb carriers´ out of the light (turn them) and put the light aside; the bulbs will hang out through the hole on their wires. Peer through the hole, and you should see the snorkle. Afair, there´s a screw you can reach through the hole and another screw you can reach from top.

I think you´ll have to take the passenger side battery out to get at it. I didn´t know the snorkle was there before I did that. Be sure to take the ground connectors off of both batteries before taking off the positive connector on the passenger side battery.

Once the snorkle is loosened, you can fumble it out through the hole on the front.

Olee: Just to make sure, the plastic device I have on my 95 doesn't look like the pics I have seen of the "snorkel" everyone says to remove from these trucks. It is short and L-shaped and channels air from directly behind the turn signal light to the right side inner fender panel. It does have two screws holding it in place, one low behind the grill and one higher up on the fender side. I thought the "snorkel" was the plastic tube between the inner and outer fender panels. Any thoughts??? Thanks.
