Installed rebuitl pump and don't really know how to set timming. I advanced it untill it just started to chatter cold. Truck runs waaay better now, but has lots of black smok when cold start selanoid is open(on). Less black smoke when warm, but more that befor replacement. Also motor loudness is up overall at all tempatures. I am wondering if timming is done by ear or do they make some sort of tool to set it.

Thanks

What year model is your truck?
How many miles are on the engine?
How far do you have it advanced right now?
Black smoke could indicate your timing is too far advanced, or there is a problem with your HPCA coolant switch, or low opening pressure in the injectors, or dirty air filter, restricted exhaust, lots of possibilities.

92 6.2 3500 truck 100K runs great starts easily clean filter, good exhaust fast idle seems to work correctly. I advaned it untill it started to rattle excessively then backed it off. Still seems slightly down on power from a few years ago. What kinds of smoke am I looking for on startup operating temp ect.

thanks

A little black smoke on startup is a good sign, during cranking, the injection pump is in the Wide Open Throttle position internally, so black smoke means your getting plenty of cranking fuel.

Under full load while driving, you shouldn't get any smoke, or just a slight black haze from the exhaust, not a cloud, but a little is nothing to worry about. As long as its only black, and not white.

I have my pump timing mark about 1/16th of an inch to the left of the engine case line. I would not go more than that amount.

I'd like to hear more about timing mark. The fellow who re-built my injector pump (named Mark) said he set it to get more milage at sacrifice of power.

"1/16" left of mark" - is that as you stand at radiator and looking toward engine - then go "left"? Is that how we time diesels?

I have to push it up hills now - but milage is pretty good - 20 mpg on flat at 65 on overdrive and cruise control. (never happens here in hilly SE Ohio, tho')

left is towards left hand or driver's side of truck to advance static timing.
