: PPE, Edge or Wait?
jermstyle 07-29-2005, 05:36 PM Disclaimer: I have been searching on the topic of LLY programmers and chips for the past week. I’m only posting to get the ‘opinions’ of the crowd here on the forum.
I have a 2005 CC 4x4 LLY Allison that I have a lot of plans for.
I’m ready to get a chip and I would like to just get some opinions based on my application.
The truck will soon receive an 8 inch lift and 37 inch tires, it’s going to pull a race car trailer with my camaro occasionally and mostly just be driven around. I do plan to have the transmission built at some point, just not right away. And last, this is a daily driver.
I have narrowed it down to these two solutions.
PPE Hot XCelerator + Duramax LLY Enforcer set on a low level until I re-build the tranny.
Edge Juice/Attitude
I may at some point add nitrous to this setup, and I don’t mind getting real gauges if I end up going with the PPE so the attitude isn’t a big deal for me
Also, I've heard something about Edge releasing a new product that might be in the PPE performance range? Is this something I should wait for?
Thanks in advance for any input.
BTW My truck has 2400 miles on the clock.
Max Power 07-29-2005, 05:39 PM I would go with the Edge/Attitude. It is the most refined out of the 6 boxes I own. It has lots of power and very little smoke and it never sets P1093's. Once you get your transmission upgrades done there might be more choice on the market. For now nothing is perfect.
I'd go w/ the Edge now too. You can always use it for the trans slip and gear selection even if you get a different tuner down the line. Another good thing about the Edge/ Attitude....when the Hot version (the one that could compare to the PPE tune) is released, you can send your Edge in and have it update for a few hundred bucks. A lot of people use the Edgge to stack also. I like the on the fly adjustments the Attitude offers. It is a great unit.
McRat 07-29-2005, 06:55 PM Keep in mind the Edge will not reset codes or remove the speed limiter. The PPE can.
I'm running a PPE/Edge stack right now for testing. Seems to work good.
Goalnightx 07-31-2005, 05:53 PM Never had the juice, but I can say I have the Hot PPE box and am very happy. Roasted a Dodge cummins on Edge level 5 while I was on level 2 with my box. Clean, quick power as it shifts. My $0.02.
dmaxalliTech 07-31-2005, 05:58 PM I'd say the PPE as it will allow you to set your tire size and if needed, gear ratio.
You wont have the adjustability that Edge offers and will need seperate gauges too though
LarryJewell 07-31-2005, 06:19 PM i like the edge. i'd forget about the 37" tires, fuel mileage will suck........I went from 285's to 35x12.50x17 and dropped 3.5 mpg..........i will be going back to the 285's next week, did i forget to mention that 0-60 times go down by 2.5 sec.. with the difference of a 285 tire and a 35" tire.
DSTRBD 07-31-2005, 11:49 PM Another vote for the PPE box(s). Smoothest power not to mention the most of any available LLY box. Edge makes a good product also, but does seem to be as refined as the PPE products.
jermstyle 08-01-2005, 03:30 PM Well I was leaning towards the PPE because of the extra functionality of having a programmer, plus the fact that it makes more power on the highest setting than the Edge. The only downside is that all of the diesel performance shops I have called about ordering one have said that the drivability is poor and than the Edge smokes less and is easier to drive.
Anyone care to elaborate on this?
I don’t mind running a stack, but it seems more logical to stack PPE products rather than Edge and PPE.
McRat 08-01-2005, 03:46 PM Set on Kill, the PPE is a bit twitchy at first. After a week or so, it smooths out, and gets even better if you stack a VA on it. Warning - Big Tunes smoke like a freight train, this is the PPE/VA stack at the Turlock Pull:

Was the strongest "Street Mod" truck that showed, and was only beaten by drugs or Unlimited trucks.
jermstyle 08-02-2005, 04:03 PM I just ordered the PPE with the latest software so we'll see! I'm planning to run level 3 (180 FWHP) on my stock truck.
MiDmax 08-02-2005, 04:04 PM  What kind of EGT's can I expect towing with the PPE (Eono)and or Standard? I have the Predator and now am looking at the High EGT's  .
I am going to Bristol for the Nascar Race at the end of this month and would like to either try something else or stick/w stock. I'd kinda like to have a comparison ;) .
lakingslayer 08-02-2005, 05:03 PM I just ordered the PPE with the latest software so we'll see! I'm planning to run level 3 (180 FWHP) on my stock truck.
Better have a trans upgrade lined up.
jermstyle 08-02-2005, 05:29 PM Trans Upgrade - The build kits aren't very expensive... How much does it cost for the re-build?
DSTRBD 08-02-2005, 06:07 PM The LLY's run hot period. Not much we can do there except open up the exhaust and intake to help it get more air. Adding fuel will only amplify this problem so any tune you get, will increase your egt's. That being said, the PPE Xcelerator lower tunes will run a little cooler than the Predator. Dont look for a huge impovement as its not there.
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 08-02-2005, 11:00 PM With that in mind, how hot is too hot for an LLY? On the LB7 everyone says not to get over 1200 degrees, the LLY can do that easily STOCK! Is a higher number acceptable for the LLY?
And how much does the cold air intakes help the egt's? 50, 100, 200 degrees??
jermstyle 08-02-2005, 11:16 PM Edge says 1350 pre-turbo...
Turbo6600-HD 08-03-2005, 01:27 AM wow that was a nice truck...so PPE/VA is a pretty good stack? no problems with it?
DSTRBD 08-03-2005, 10:44 AM 1200 is nothing for the LLY as the will hit that stock without too much effort. Talking with Garrett engineers, they claim 1400 is no big deal as long as you are not there for extended periods of time.
MiDmax 08-03-2005, 11:13 AM Soooooo, When I'm pullin the 8500lbs.-5ver from MI to Bristol,TN. I won't have to be concerned if I'm pulling a grade for 3+ miles at 1300 to1400 deg. After hearing all the horror stories of overheating I'm already sweating and I still have till the 19th....
DSTRBD 08-03-2005, 01:11 PM MiDmax- I guess I was referring to the turbo, not overheating. My point was that the turbo can handle 1400* just dont stay there for extended periods. Sorry for the confusion.
MiDmax 08-03-2005, 03:17 PM ;) No Problem DSTRBD, I'm just looking for the best way to go.
dmaxalliTech(ERIC) is ordering a PPE for me to try. He's just looking to have 1 around the shop. How would you rate the Tow tune in the PPE to the Tow tune in the Pred.
jermstyle 08-03-2005, 03:54 PM I can't wait for my PPE!! :)
lakingslayer 08-03-2005, 11:16 PM I can't wait for TTS.
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 08-03-2005, 11:24 PM MiDmax- I guess I was referring to the turbo, not overheating. My point was that the turbo can handle 1400* just dont stay there for extended periods. Sorry for the confusion.
Not to be a PIA or anything but define extended periods: 1 minute? 5 minutes? more or less? I know it's not scientific but if I'm pulling my 13K load up a hill that's a 2 miles long that'd be like 2 minutes solid. Just trying to clarify.
DSTRBD 08-04-2005, 10:22 AM Cummin Stroke- Good question. We never got into the exact amount of time as Im sure they probably dont know for sure either. However, 1400* did not seem to be an issue with them. Remeber, you are monitoring the temp of the exhaust flowing through the manifold, not the actual temp of the manifold, turbo, etc. Basically what they were saying is exhaust flowing at that rate would take a long time to heat the turbo up enough to cause damage. What that exact time is, I couldnt tell you as I have not personally fried one yet. (knocking on wood)
jermstyle 08-09-2005, 02:27 PM I just loaded my Hot PPE on level 2... This thing is pretty sweet! I want to try 3 though, would that fry my stock allison for sure?
Goalnightx 08-09-2005, 05:02 PM I just loaded my Hot PPE on level 2... This thing is pretty sweet! I want to try 3 though, would that fry my stock allison for sure?
I ran for a few days on level 3. Skoke increase tenfold :p: I would not recommend running L3 with the stock tranny. If you do, watch the downshifts from 5-4!!!
jermstyle 08-09-2005, 05:29 PM I might load it up for a nice second gear pull and then yank it out because I dont feel like spending 4500 bucks on a tranny this month.
cbra212 08-10-2005, 01:01 AM Level 3 limped mine from 2nd to 3rd gear shifts, so be CAREFULL. I am going to try the VA with my PPE as well, The PPE doesnt seem to like the Edge at all. I also have a Quadzilla for sale for 300.00 if any body id interested. 9 mph faster on 135 than Edge on Level 5 in 1/4 mile. Wont stack though. But great stand alone unit for everyday driving.
duramaxin 08-10-2005, 01:44 PM Go with PPE its awsome. They have excellent tech support not that I have needed it but its there if you do. I know people who have the edge/juice and if they could aford to change they would. My truck set on 240 hp will smoke any edge product on the highest setting. I have done it several times and my truck goes past 96 mph.
You wont be sorry. There is a distributor in Atlanta that has them for $750.00 thats the best price I found.
