: tell me about the Co-pilot
Dmax05 07-29-2005, 04:44 PM Ok as many of you know I am going to add some MORE power to truck. And I am planning doing it within a few days. I am thinking about ATS, my questions are what does the Co-Pilot do? Do I need one? and is there any other usefull information you might have would help me?
Thanks all!
ratlover 07-29-2005, 05:19 PM just a co pilot isnt going to help you really, you need a trans upgrade and converter. Take a look at ATS's website. They have a pretty lenghty write up on it. Do you need it? not really unless your going stupid with drugs ect. The ET you pick up vrs the $$$ on most trucks isnt worth it. JMO
GMC-2002-Dmax 07-29-2005, 05:53 PM I guess it depends on what you want to do with the truck and the amount of money you have to spend on it.............
It will definitely make it shift much quicker and cleaner with the Co-Pilot then without.........
A lot of the shifting quality has to do with the TCM, it is always trying to learn and make the shifts better.........that's great for a ride around the block truck, but for drag racing, sled pulling you want those shifts quick and clean without worrying about a relearn...........it also hydraulically helps the clutch apply and helps to dump the fluid faster during the shifts.......
Even if you decide to go with a SC-III or SC-IV or SC-V you can always add the Co-Pilot later.........my Suncoast shifts quite nicely driving around and did well enough at the track to net a 13.09/ET pass.........I am hoping that I pick up a tenth or two with the Co-Pilot.........;)
Plenty of reading on it..........

edkelly 07-29-2005, 11:13 PM we ordered a suncoast iv ats was already in the instructions from suncoast say relearn is lengthy
trans went in last nite today shifting is still choppy under hard accel; and edge juice on 5 pred on 100%
any one know how long it should take ?/
we want to install snow meth system to lower egts add horses
2005 lly
edkelly 07-29-2005, 11:17 PM in a previous thread someone x2 said not to use copilot trany tcm speedo delete why not ??
122 mph is top speed also is there a chip that raises redline ??
Dmax05 07-30-2005, 01:49 AM So this Co-pilot thing learns when to shift for good smooth acceleration?? I am thinking about EDGE and Bullydog, no drugs. So maby an ATS stage V??? with Co-pilot??? sound good?
Thanks again for the help.

I recently did a full FAST LEARN/Reset Taps and the shifts are almost where I want them to be.........this was done roughly 2 weeks ago and 1500 miles ago..........it really depends on how you drive, if you can't run it up through the gears into 5th it can take a little longer........my advice is to wait until they are almost like you want them..........at that point it has probably switched to slow learn and will make minor adjustments from there.

Almost all programmers and custom ECM tunes will raise the limiter electronically within the ECM, so you don't need to hook up any wires.

The Co-Pilot does not learn to shift.........you adjust it for how firm a shift you want and at what boot level you want it to start applying the firmer shifts..........it has a setting specifically for drag racing that clicks the shifts off quick and clean........ATS V already is built with the Co-Pilot.......
Good Luck.........

ratlover 08-01-2005, 11:31 AM With the co pilot turned up and doing its thing I definatly wouldnt call it smooth. Especially at part throttle with it turned up passangers with think something is wrong with your truck. And barking the tires at part throttle upshifts really freak out cars next to you;) If your a drag racer looking for every tenth then go for it, if you have lotsa cash and want a new toy go for it, for most people its 100% not needed and you can find other ways to drop a grand and still go faster. But if your getting serious about going fast and adding some nutty power then it works. I run around with it turned down for the most part, driving with it set to kill is anoying. So it can be made were your trans will shift like normal or anywere in between.
Dmax05 08-01-2005, 01:43 PM I just dont want my tranny to fry. I want to be able to hot rod around, do a few brake stands, scare passangers and still be able to race evey now and then...Do you think I should just stick with the stock tranny? what would you recommend?
Thanks
Matt
ratlover 08-01-2005, 01:51 PM either put a aftermarket kit in it or trans + a converter or keep the power levels down or be prepared to smoke your trans. Break stands and hole shots in 4x4 are hard on a trans as is higher HP, the more you add of any or all of the above the quicker your trans will fry. Just a co pilot wont get you buy.
steve s 08-01-2005, 01:56 PM well i have a suncoast tranny done by eric and just won the DHRA event saturday and my times were the same all night long and tranny shifted firm and fast on all runs. to gain maybe a 10th of a second a g note isn't worth it in my book.
ARICO100 08-07-2005, 02:45 PM Hi all,
just a quick question about the torc converter and sled pulling.
Will the co pilot allow me to adjust the rpm before it engages like a high stall converter?
thanks
GMC-2002-Dmax 08-07-2005, 04:18 PM No,
The CO-PILOT will enhance the shifts, firmer or softer and bring the enhancements on sooner, lower or higher boost levels........
It will keep the TC locked on the 2-5 gear shifts and will click them off at 3000-3200 rpm like clockwork.....

just out of curiosity, how fast do you think you would run w/ 35" tires and a 6" lift. It looks like you have almost the same setup that I am going to get soon
Dmax05 08-08-2005, 04:09 PM So what should I be looking for? All I want is a tranny that wont give me any sh*t.
I am going to stack edge and tts most likley and thats all.
About how much do you think I will be spending?
Thanks all
chaseum 08-08-2005, 04:25 PM go to atsdiesel.com They have the prices on the site. I am just an army mechanic. The only research I have done on these trucks are w/in the past 3or so months. From what I have been recommended to do is to at least go w/ the converter/shift kit. I was going to get an ats or tts converter (1388$ from ats.. forgot tts) and transgo shift kit (195-215$).
This is what some people do... Since you probably plan on keeping this truck for a while and you probably like to have fun w/out worry. get a kit like the one ats sells w/ the converter, pump kit, clutch pack (c-1through 3) for around 2,300. Mike Lovrich is doing my trans soon and he is recommending the c-4 clutch pack as well. He told me you have to dig into the transmission a little more for the c-4 clutch pack.
I do not know which is better..ats...tts...sunco.. or whatever else is out there but this is just an idea. I am still up in the air for what I am getting. Still don't know if I want to get the kit w/ the co-pilot or not. The bad thing is that I have to sell my camaro for this stuff. I don't think I can pull a car that has less hp than my truck to the drag stip (camaro isn't street legal +too costly for 110)
Hope this helps a little
Dmax05 08-08-2005, 04:52 PM hey thanks for your input...glad to have you helping in the war! Have fun and talk to you later.

The answer you want is dependant on too many variables.......I will tell you that the lift kit and 35's are going to hurt you.........I can't tell you how much, but it sure will not help your final gear ratio with those large tires.
The track times depend onfuel system mods, launch technique, track conditions, air temps, track elevations, etc........when I run my truck at the same track it runs very close to my expected times every time I go there.
So what should I be looking for? All I want is a tranny that wont give me any sh*t.

Buy as much transmission as you can, you want a good Triple Disk Torque Converter, I would definately go with aftermarket replacement C1-C4 clutches and a main line pressure booster valve........and I recommend the transgo shift kit as well.........
A Suncoast transmission will give you all that, ATS does not use the transgo kit, but uses there own shift valves.
I have had excellent results with my SC-III and SC/TQ Converter........the Co-Pilot has made it that much better IMHO......
The TTS does not need any stacking, so if you buy an XTREME that should be all you need..........if you go with something else you will be able to stack it, you may not do as well based on what I have seen with my own truck.

chaseum 08-08-2005, 08:04 PM I think I will get the sunco. level 4 w/ the tts converter. Actually the ats was the first choice I was going to get was the ats. I am not going for the co-pilot just yet. It is a little pricey for me. I talked w/ Mike today and he quoted a fair price.
When I asked how fast I should run I meant under the best vairables: good weather, low elevation, good launch & reaction time.
The thing that sucks about going to Nevada is the fact that you end up going a full second slower than the track at sac. My brother has to trailer his camaro for 3 hours every time he wants to go any faster.
Dmax05 08-08-2005, 10:44 PM So if you are gonna do it go all out? (to be safe and not have to worry)
so make TTS my primary chip and maby add EDGE to it if I want a little more fun?
Do you think I need a lift pump with this setup? How is your Lift pump doing?
Thanks again GMC-2002-Dmax
GMC-2002-Dmax 08-08-2005, 11:09 PM The TTS tune is a reprogrammed ECM............it has an 80/120/Xtreme setting.
There is no need for an EDGE Juice with it.........
and yes..........you will need a lift pump with a TTS XTREME..........they offer one.

Dmax05 08-08-2005, 11:22 PM Ok so screw the EDGE and just kick butt on TTS a lift pump and a tough tranny.
whats the best lift pumps being made right now?
thanks again
Duratys 08-09-2005, 12:29 AM Kennedy has a set Diesel Tech has a set and so does Super Diesel.
Ive got the dual setup from Diesel Tech but have yet to put them in.
steve s 08-09-2005, 10:49 AM got the set from kennedy, about 2 1/2 hours to put in. smokes a little more with them and truck seems to pull harder through out 1/4.
