: "Torque" for Android
peckwh 10-11-2010, 08:58 PM Has anyone tried the Torque application for Android phones to use as a scanner and to measure engine parameters? It requires a bluetooth device to plug into the OBD II port. I'm wondering what kind of data it will display for a diesel. Will it display EGTs?
rodder55 10-11-2010, 10:38 PM no these trucks dont have egt untill 07.5 and its not very accurate its for dpf not engine vitals
peckwh 10-11-2010, 11:28 PM What data is available? I've seen discussions on Scangauge use and it appears that device can pull most of the data from the OBD port. Even if I can pull coolant temp, it would probably be worthwhile since everyone says the dash gauge is way off.
rodder55 10-12-2010, 11:33 AM should be similar ro ur hypertech
Chevy454 10-12-2010, 11:45 AM I have the Windows Mobile version of this (OBDKey)...I just got it a couple days ago. I asked about what would happen if I switched to an Android phone and they said to simply switch to Torque instead of my supplied software, so the OBD-->bluetooth device must be the same. I haven't had a chance to really play with it yet, whatcha wanna know?
peckwh 10-13-2010, 08:49 AM I'm trying to determine what data it will display. Is this a good alternative to Scangauge? I'm most interested in EGT and coolant temps. First is to determine if that data is pushed to the OBD port. Rodder55 claims EGT is not available on these trucks until 2007.5. The other thing would be to determine if the software you have for Windows will display the same data as the "Torque" software. You are correct on the OBD bluetooth device. They should push data to any bluetooth capable phone. I've found two online. One is about $50 and is made in China. The other is about $100 from another company out of California. I really only need this data for when I'm towing the fifth wheel across the AZ desert to monitor temps. Boost pressure would be a plus but not necessary.
qzilla 10-18-2010, 06:13 PM Its not for Android but, it does what you are looking for.

The Torque app is just a basic OBD2 app.
The iQuad app and module dill do everything it does plus you can monitor EGT, FP (or any other parameter from 0-100psi with an external sensor) and rail pressure. It also monitors MANY non-obd2 parameters such as transmissions temp, current gear, and converter status.
IF you want to use the power you can but, you do not have to. If you do it has built in safety de-fueling and other safety features as well as custom tuning features if you want to play with it.
There is also a Turbo Timer included for cooling the turbo down after those long pulls.
I know you have an android phone but, this app will work with an itouch so it does not have to be an iphone and you can get the touch for $180ish new most places or probably cheaper online?
Just an option that does mostly what you need.
peckwh 10-18-2010, 10:01 PM Thanks, I've seen your post before and it looks good but I'm a diehard Verizon guy. Perhaps if the iPhone hits Verizon next year and I make the switch, I will look into your App. Before I spent $180.00 on an iPod touch, I would go with a Scangauge and permanently mount in the truck. Looks like you've got an awesome product though. By the way, what do you plan to charge for this App once you are up and running with the full version?
RaceHemi 10-20-2010, 03:11 PM I like this, plus it can be expanded.

The problem is that the scangauge won't do the egt or many of the other parameters you need. It is also just a simple OBD2 device.

The app is free. You just need the Adrenaline/wifi package to start with.

Once again, no egt, no fuel pressure, and none of the other diesel related parameters. I also am not sure that it will even go back to the "pre-can" vehicles such as the 01-05 dmax's??

You might want to do a little research Quad....

Brad92 10-20-2010, 11:34 PM You will need to do an egt probe no matter what. Rodder55 is right. I have found bluetooth obd2 plugs on ebay for $20.
peckwh 10-21-2010, 05:47 PM What is involved in that and where does the probe go? Also, assume the tap will need to go to a dedicated gauge and does not get sent to the OBD port?
Brad92 10-21-2010, 06:14 PM The probe will need to be placed in the exhaust manifold. It can go to a dedicated gauge or a display, like the Quadzilla, or others.

Ok so you can spend another $200+ for the egt kit, making it almost $400. And again, still no fp guages or Turbo timers and you get basic OBD2 info.

$90 for the probe and $130 for the amplifier.
Show me the list of paramters they monitor. It will be about 8-12 long is all.
Most of the diesel parameters are not covered under the OBD2 interface but, are covered on the ECU data bus which is where we connect.
You will need to do an egt probe no matter what. Rodder55 is right. I have found bluetooth obd2 plugs on ebay for $20.
There are all sorts of obd2 gadgets out there. For many of the gas vehicles this is all you need however the parameters monitored on the diesels is terrible at best! That is my point.
The one thing we have always done different is provide data that matters, not just data.
Rail Pressure, Fp Pressure, EGT, Trans Slippage, Converter Status just to name a few.
My whole point I am trying to get across is that what we have is not a simple little obd2 gadget. It is a system that has everything the obd2 gadgets have but it has a WHOLE lot more stuff that is really usable.
