: single rear tire to replace duals????
dano73 07-29-2005, 02:04 PM I have an 03 3500 CC DRW GMC. I drive the sand on the east coast beaches pulling a 16000 lb 5er RV. Ive driven SRW trucks and had no problem but this truck is BAD in the sand. I drop the air press to 15lbs or less but its always diggin hard. I have 235s on it which made it a little better, but I see these ford and dodge guys pullin with no problem. My truck just doesnt have the rear spacing or ground clearance these guys have. Does anyone know of anybody who has put a single fat rear tire on a dually for traction?? I know the county replaces the duals on their dump trucks for sand use but ive never seen a pickup. HELP guys I'm getting killed out here!!!!!
countrycoach 07-29-2005, 02:40 PM I don't know much about a dually in the sand, or pulling a camper in the sand, but one thing comes to mind. Maybe you should try puting some taller, fater tires on he camper! Also if you don't care about rotating your tires you could convert the front end to put a regular tire and wheel on it, that way not only will it give the front more flotation, but also will clear some of the way for the outside back tire! The prob is the inside tire has a nice compact track to follow where the outside back tires is trying to make its own path through soft loose sand. Just a thought, im sure others will have a better idea.
Mr. D 07-30-2005, 12:35 AM Standard rear differential? Both sides of the axle pulling or just one digging in? I think you should start saving for a 4 x 4! Six wheels pulling and a low range transfer case makes all the difference in the world! You may be asking a lot from a 2WD vehicle! On some of the Calif. and Oregon beaches you'd be toast with that weight on a 2WD!
56Nomad 07-30-2005, 03:01 AM We do lots of sand here on the West coast. Ocean and desert and
my 4x4 has never been stuck, although depending on the type of
sand, lower air pressure is a must.

RichLube 07-30-2005, 06:45 AM I have seen semi trailers running "super singles" instead of duals recently. Maybe something like that is or will be available in LT sizes.

This is very true and I have seen them almost daily. You will have to convert to the "big rig" wheels although,445/50R22.5.

dano73 07-30-2005, 09:15 AM Thanks guys. Those super singles could be just what I am looking for. I was originally gonna put rickson wheels on it but the guy at rickson talked me out of it. He said when you hit the sand you'll wish you had your 16s back. It seems those 19.5s are made for hi speed long hauls and dont air down well. Oh yeah, my truck doesn't get stuck either, but put 16000lbs of 5er with 3600lbs of pin weight & firewood, coolers, generator, etc, etc, then we'll talk. And Dave, my truck is a 4X4, er 6X6 with a limited slip rear. [I forgot they make pickups 2WD]
dano73 07-30-2005, 04:17 PM Hey Nomad...lets see a shot of your rig going UPhill!!!! lol.

Tom Cobb 07-30-2005, 10:51 PM I read something recently about the future duallys will have supersingles on them. Not sure when but it is not far off, year or two.

03 Radio Flyer 08-09-2005, 11:14 AM Need to talk to a super-single trucker about blow-outs at highway speeds, to understand the REAL difference.....
My advice...buy a used tank. They have no problem in sand, mud, or snow, and can turn on a dime.....a real big dime.

benz_020 08-10-2005, 12:43 AM i know alcoa has a 22.5 that is over 17" wide
dont know where to get a tire but theres the rim
Jperry 08-10-2005, 09:37 AM There was a fad about 15 years ago where people were putting one big tire on the back of Duallys. Seems if memory serves me correctly it didn't track right on the roads due to the roads not being completely flat. They did look neat though, maybe that fad was just a southern thing also, I do know it didn't last very long. There had to be a reason, the reason above was the only one I remember hearing that made any sense at all.
juliusracing 08-10-2005, 09:51 AM I've seen some older duallys that there have converted a dually to one wide rear tire. i believe it was a mickey thomson sportsman tire 15 or 16 inches wide. I have not seen any running around lately. i am sure you you keep looking you will find them.
pepperidge 12-06-2005, 07:37 PM I had a friend with a big block dually with a b&m blower (I think) and a lot of other goodies on it... That Mickey Thompson single was needed on his...
tazzmayer 12-07-2005, 05:32 AM buddy of mine had a set of 14" wide eaton wheels with a 16" wide Super Swamper:eek: that did real good for pulling boats around on sand in the upper mississippi sand..

carhauler 12-08-2005, 07:02 PM Heres the hot setup for sand , but like Mackin said you have to go 22.5
