: Why does Deleting the Kitty VOID Warrenty??????

I've done a search on this issre and everybody says that deleting the Kitty will void the warranty.

Why???

I know it is illegal to modify exhaust...but Deisels are not required, in CA. to have CATS.

And if I "damaged" my stock CAT, I am allowed to replace with a cheaper alternative. Like the MRBP downpipe.

Am I Right or Wrong:confused::confused::confused:

It can't really void the entire vehicle warranty. It could void warranty on anything that it causes problems with which should be nothing. I wouldn't worry about it unless you have a really uptight dealer in which case you should be going somewhere else anyways.

Removing you kitty will NOT void the warranty, I asked before I had my 5" system put on. Places like Midas wont remove the cat becuase they will get fined big time, so they say it will void the warrany so they wont loose business...(thats what they told me and guess what...they still lost business)
Just ask "everybody" how improving EGT's and prolonging the engine life will void you warranty....see what they say.

Technically it's illegal to remove any emissions control parts on a vehicle...Penalized by law, not just your dealer....I've never heard of someone being prosecuted for this offence, but it is a law...

I was asked about it when I got pulled over...but I told them that I bought it that way..they cant prove me wrong so they dont do a thing about it. Its kinda like the law agains "altering vehical suspention" its a law but that dosent stop people from lifting their truck...they cant enforce it becuase to many people do it.
...I say kill the cat..you dont need one and it will help your truck in the long run. IMO

GM can and will void the powertrain part of your warrenty if the dealer tells them the cat is gone. Any modification to the powertrain is grounds to void the warrenty and since it will affect the emissions they can void it. Truth be told it should not but its up to you to fight them once they have done it. So for most its easier just to put the front pipe with cat back in prior to going to the dealership.

Have any of the forum members out there had their warranty voided because of this? Just wondering if people really are having problems w/the dealers, or is this is all unnecessary worrying?

OK then if "any modification to the powertrain is grounds to void the warrenty" then why is a CAT back system ok to do????

Hey Scott, those prosecutions must be handle by the same folks that enforce those pillow/mattress warnings of "do not remove tag, under penalty of law".. hahahehe):h

They took one off in Diesel Power mag reasoning that the State of residence did not require it, but as Partsguy stated, it is technically illegal to alter it.

Chances are, a cat-back is too as many emissions laws include noise emissions.

Personally, I'm just as guilty as the next guy...

The cat is where they draw the line at so anything after the cat is not considered emissions related so they cannot void the warranty, but, they can however blame it for any problem you might be having and force you to replace the stock system prior to them doing any warranty work. It's pretty stupid if you ask me but those are the rules.

Diesel Tech, can you offer us some hints as to what kind of performance benefits you are seeing? How much cooler EGT's on average?

There are some gains but not alot in any one area, about 50 degrees drop under pulling conditions, about 2-3 Hp increase and the turbo spools a little quicker dure to less restriction in the exhaust.
