: Dumb oil filter problem....

Over the last week I have been in the process of changing all of the fluids in my "new to me" 05 LLY. Everything has been a breeze(including the fuel filter) until I got to the oil filter tonight. I have worked on cars and motorcycles my whole life and have never had an oil filter that has been on so tight! This is my first change and the filter looks new and so did the oil so I am presuming the dealership changed it before I bought it. I tried a metal band strap oil filter wrench and broke it, tried a nylon strap with no love, tried the vice grip style pliers, and finally tried the old screw driver through the filter trick. I am now left with nothing to grab onto because but the base of the filter where the seal is. After 3 hours I am sore, furious, and left with an overall feeling of defeat by something sooo simple =(. Any thoughts or ideas??? Thanks again!

What I found works the best on tight filters is a big ass pair of channel lock pliers. The teeth provide the grip you need, and the long handles will give leverage. Get a good bite on the base of the filter and turn. It will go.

I've heard of people being down to where they had to use a punch/chisel on the flow holes of the filter and tap them loose with that since it sounds like you are down that far anyway (obviously being VERY careful not to get too aggressive)?

Did you try one of the strap kind that has the bicycle chain wrap around it? That's usually my last resort, but always gets it.

Finally got it off! I did try the chain style wrench and even tried a punch on the return holes. Finally had to resort to drilling holes ( carefully) to release some of the pressure on the seal and took a pair of needle nose pliars in the return holes and used a large screw driver for leverage. Got it off without causing any damage....5 hrs later and more cussing then I have ever done. The filter was so tight against the housing that I could not even get a razor blade btw it and the seal. It also did not help that the seal was dry when I finally got it off.

And let that be a lesson in why we always oil the gasket before installation of new filter.

X2...............always always lube the gasket on a filter before installing it then hand tight and you won't have a problem next time.
