Yesterday I could smell gear oil inside the cab and when I went to look I found that my front Diff is leaking right where the 4 bolts connect the CV joint to the front diff on the passengers side. Is there supposed to be a gasket in there or just silicone? How hard of a job is this to fix? Shouldnt be more than just changing a CV joint, right?
Thanks in advance, Jason

You mean the output shaft seal, right? (The stub shaft that the cv axle bolts to)
If so, that's not a bad job at all, as long as the stub shaft comes out....

Yeah that sounds like what you're talking about. What parts do I need to fix it? Is it a seal or a gasket? Once I take the CV off, I wont have trans. to get parts if ya know what I mean...
Thanks again,
Jason

Have you changed the fluid lately and how bad is it leaking? Later! Frank

I developed the same exact problem........................gear oil covers the whole front end. It looks like it is getting tossed around by the driver's side half shaft. Off to the dealer tomorrow.

I switched to synthetic about 32,000 miles ago and yesterday was the first I smelled it/noticed it. Like carbon said, Its throwing it around pretty good. The parts store didnt have a seal today so I added more fluid to it (A little over 1 pint) and I could tell/smell that it was puking it out pretty good again already.

I don't know if you'll find someone other than GM that carries that seal..I know I can't get one through work...

I checked at our local Carquest (the only auto parts store around) and they didnt have one on hand and said the whole company doesnt sell all that many but they are supposed to have it there today. I just havnt made it to town yet to check and see. I wish there was a way to know if I had the right part before I got it apart....
Thanks!

I think Carquest carries National seals IIRC Jason..I know CR doesn't have a listing for that seal (I just checked my books again)

Does anyone know how to get that D**N flange off of the stub shaft? I had the tire and CV joint off and I tried a 3 point puller on the flange and I couldnt get it to budge. Is it just pressed on? Whats holding it, splines or a key? The seal I got today looks like the right one from as far as I can see, as long as the shaft behind the stub shaft is larger than the stub shaft. The center hole on the seal is larger than what the stub shaft appears to be. OD looks good though from what I can tell.
Thanks again,
Jason
