A friend and I are going to try installing a 5th wheel hitch in my truck. Local shops want $250-300 just to install the hitch so I am going to try it myself. I am pretty mechanically inclined just never tried installing a 5th wheel hitch before.

The hitch is a Reese #30091 Pro Series 16k Square Tube Slider with #30095 Universal rail kit.

Any tips or advice to make it easier/go smoother?

Pretty much, take your time and do it right, you will be fine.

I put the exact same hitch in, in August. The custom mounts are worth the extra money since you just bolt them up to the frame. Measure well when drilling through the bed but there's a lot of play in the slots. The hardest part was torquing everything down and getting up under the truck. Make sure to remove the spare tire, that'll give you a whole lot more room. I couldn't get my heat shield loose so I just bent it up out of the way enough to get to the bolts/nuts.

Thanks for the tip. I haven't ordered the hitch yet because one of the trailers I am looking at has a Husky 16k slider that comes with it. Waiting to see if i work out a deal with him or not.
