Just took delivery of a Racor 490R Fuel Filter. A lot bigger than the picture. Now where is the best place on my 95 C3500 to mount this beast and keep it protected.

The 490R is an 18-wheeler filter. You could use the 445R for your Duramax. It has shorter length for installation. All 400-series have same ports, so no problems with fuel flow.

Might see if your dealer will swap units for you. If not at first element change you could switch to R45 element rather than R90.

rackerman is right, in that the 400 series will take a 445,460, or 490 filter elements. However, the only difference in the filter elements is not just size. The 45,60,90 number is also the flow rate of the filter. GM recommends the 460 element. If I ever had any warrany issues, that's the one I'd want on my truck considering how picky GM is about things like that. Go to www.parker.com/racor and there is an article there on this. They actually recommend the 600 series, but the only difference is that the 600 doesn't have the primer and the 400 does. I called Parker, and they told me that it is acceptable to substitute the 400 series. Also, the larger filter only costs about $1 more, so you might as well get your money's worth. I am going to install mine with room for the 60 filter element because I don't think it will clear my hood with a 90. I may be wrong about that, but it doesn't look like there is enough room.

I doubt warranty is much of an issue on a 95 anymore, but I woulds still go with the biggest element you can fit in there. Timberwolf is right, the difference in element price is negligable.

I am going to stick with the 490 since I have been told that "bigger is better" but then that was from my ex wife and what does she know. Since I will be installing this on the frame in front of the lift pump, suitably enclosed to protect from ground debris, I think this will work well.

I agree, put the largest one on that will fit.
