: U-Haul...What a Flippin Disaster..!!
steakman 10-08-2010, 12:19 AM Well..it seemed easy enough, get a small tandem axle trailer and load up all my tools, tool boxes, sports gear, Suitacases for 2, boxes of personal effects and head out west from Ontario.
I go get th trailer..toook 5 minutes to do paperwork and gee, im impressed - that was quick. Go to hook up and find there is no tongue jack on the damned thing.?? WTF?? so good thing there was another guy there as well so we helped each other and got it on the ball. then go to find it is only a 4 pin connection and there is no harness lead ..? Go ask for one and the woman there says |oh go to Princess Auto and Buy one" excuse me.?? Again WTF is up with that.? now I'm getting pissed - BIG TIME. I dont have time for this shit.
Anyway, had to go buy the lead and a good lock (not provided), get it home, then 15 minutes dickin around with the chains and just getting it off the ball so that I could use said truck for otherthings while i get it loaded.
So we leave after checking to see if signals and brake lights work..kewl ,they do.
After leaving around 7, we are on the highway for about an hour and I get pulled over by the OPP...nice guy he comes up and tells me, hey you werent speeding but when you passed me, you went invisible..!! I said no shit.!! and laughed. But it seemed that the trailer had no running or marker lights. Aint that just flippin lovely. So now, for the rest of my 3600km trip to Calgary if in the evening, I will have to use my 4 way flashers as I have no wish to try to use their 800 "bugger off " phone number to try and get that fixed and waste my time on the side of the rd.
I will never use their useless garbage product again. And I garantee you, the shit will definitely hit their fan when i drop it off in Calgary..!
Cheers,
Theo
banshee1973 10-08-2010, 12:23 AM That sucks man that would realy piss me off too!
Oregonnovaguy 10-08-2010, 12:35 AM I am shocked! They sent you to an auto parts store to buy the plug adapter? Every u-haul dealer I ever went to sells those things for 25 #@%* dollars! And, of course every time I go to rent another trailer, I can never find one of the 10 of those stupid things I bought in the past!
stump_breaker 10-08-2010, 08:03 AM Last time I used U-Haul it was a total cluster F. They gave me a 23' POS truck that was missing a gear and had just enough power to make it about 50 mph with enough time. That was an experience.
403turbo 10-08-2010, 11:09 AM Yeah, the time I rented a truck to move across town with and I could see through the floor between the front seats I swore never again.
blkdmax05 10-10-2010, 12:38 AM There was a local news story a while back that looked into uhaul. They found TONS of safety violations and some othe vehicals were not even properly registered. The local uhaul place has a line of trailers sitting there all with no jack-ive always wondered why not. I guess its to save $75 bucks when they buy the POS trailers in the first place
BlackMax Canada 10-10-2010, 10:37 AM Steakman...hope you made it to Calgary alright. Chitty about the rental trailer tho, especially as they dont go cheap in the first place.
Later man. Drop us a line when you get settled in.
DMAXXED 10-10-2010, 12:20 PM I stopped using Uhaul years ago. I've reserve a moving truck well in advance. Taken the day off for the move and aranged my buddies to help and only to find I had no truck. They say its reserved if one comes in. Even if there were some in the parking lot, they said they were for someone else. This has happend more than once from different places. I WILL NEVER USE UHAUL.
BombDocDiesel 10-10-2010, 12:31 PM Theo I hate to hear when people go through this. I'm not sure how U-Haul works in Canada. If the agent at drop won't refund or reimburse you, ensure they know you want the main number and request a full refund. Call the corporate number. They will reimburse you. I would also call the regional and make sure I was renting on U-Haul's dime for the next trip as well. The four-pin flat on the trailer is the agency's responsibility...period. That was BS of them.
The independent agents like that make us all look like shit. The reason the trailers don't have jacks anymore is simple. It's expensive to replace them. It's even more expensive to repair a bent tongue. That cost is transferred to the customer. The only trailers that have jacks are auto transports and those jacks pretty much suck as they are designed so even if the customer leaves them down the runners just grind or break off.
soloud 11-17-2010, 10:27 PM I hate uhaul I picked up one of their POS car trailers one time got 15 miles down the road and the damn wheel passed me coming up to a stop light. I called the place and they told me I was negligent for not checking the lug nuts. SCREW UHAUL!!!!!
Bison 11-18-2010, 01:51 AM Was that way 30 yrs ago already.
I moved from Ontario to Alberta,i rented a 3 ton U-haul truck,i picked it up just before closing on a fryday, had to start with booster cables.loaded up on saterday, Checked oil(not a drop on the dipstick:eek:,go get oil,was 3 ltr short)Wouldn't start again on sunday when leaving,Boost again.I had to do that every morning for the remainder of the trip.
Once on the road the thing behaved like a dog,no power what so ever, and an out of round front wheel to boot,no damn spare either(Kadaka boom kadaka boom for the next 3000 mls,Oh what fun i had with that old hunk of shit:mad:),even the steering was sloppy,i was al over the road.
At the first fill up( way to FFen soon i had to add a liter oil again,Gawd almighty that thing was thirsty on both oil and gas)+ the airfilter had rattled loose(broke center stud) and laid beside the engine.( screw that ,It could lay there till alberta for all i cared)
Going north west around lake huron i had the biggest fun, going uphill in te mountains from 4th to third to sec ..to first, barely gettin there ,going down hill almost in mexican overdrive cause that wore out mill couldn't hold that thing back and the brakes... well, they were f"cked like the rest of that wreck.
I ran out of fuel once(bought a couple cans after) cause there was no ffen service on big stretches being it still late winter and a lot of stations where closed till spring(you go figger)I was glad i had my wife drive behind with the car.
Well ,i made it in one piece to my destination without any breakdown, but it took five 14 hr days.
I complained to U-haul about the sorry state of their vehicle,They didn't care one bit,i had to fight to get some compensation for the oil it used on the trip.
Never again.
Brad92 11-19-2010, 02:49 PM I have used the tandem axle UHAUL trailers alot in the past year and a half. Maybe its just me, but for $30 a day unlimited miles you can't really beat it. The no tongue jack deal is only an issue if you want to unhook when its loaded. The trailer itself is pretty light.
I went to Walmart to get the 4 wire flat adapter for 10 bucks. Maybe Texas UHAUL is better? I guess we got on the Iranian dude's good side at one of the 2 locations we used, because by the end of a few rentals, he was asking if we wanted free 20 oz drinks or anything else in the convenience store. :thumb:
Boostable 11-20-2010, 05:48 PM About a yr ago we decided to become a "U-Haul Rental Center" at our hardware store. It lasted about a month before I told the guy to cancel us, take us off the site, and come get the crap!
The rep asked why we wanted to cancel.. I said think about it. Everyone who comes to rent your trucks is already pissed off, cause they don't want to be moving anyway. The process is horrendous, and when they bring it back they are even more pissed off because its a piece of sh*%. .... no thanks.
What a process... I have never done business with them personally or professionally since.
Hope you make it ok.
jackoue 11-20-2010, 07:27 PM I got to use a UHAUL piece of crap.
My parents moved back from Quebec to BC
Picked up a 26ft 3 ton truck
An hour after picking it up the trans was slipping when shifting gears UNLOADED, so we call them and they say use it. Well we get it loaded and take off for BC, now talk about trans slippage on shifts, every hill we hit we were down to 20-30km foot to the boards, every gust of wind would cause the opposite side door to pull open at the top...what a chore keeping that thing on the road. Hit the brakes and off the otherway it would go. And thirsty or what about $70 per hour on fuel. We were towing a car behind but had to unhook it due to lack of power thru the hills. The first gas station we turn off the truck Coolant starts pouring out the overflow.....so we fill up $300 in the uhual, my dads 98 1/2 ton Chev with a 350 takes $45, my moms 04 Accord V6 takes 20. This happened at every fill up.
Now we are just outside Saskatoon and we stop for fuel, the Uhaul wont start...fuel pump packed it in. SO I call Uhaul and after 30 minutes waiting the girl on the phone asks whats wrong SO I tell her, The trans slips, it leaks coolant at every stop and now the thing wont start....She says try a boost and call us back, So I tell her it turns over the battery is fine and she keeps insisting I try a boost...so I finally tell her I am a GM tech the fuel pump is F@#cked. SO they then try to get us to a shop so we hook a chain to the 1/2 ton and tow it over.....guy calls around and says it will be at least 3-4 days for a fuel pump....boy I am PISSED ....I go in the back of the 1/2 ton and pull out an axe and start beating on the fuel tank and finally get it to start. I then drive it to Saskatoon and pull in to the Uhaul dealer and have to argue with them to get another truck...after 1hr 45 min with the dealer and Uhaul they FINALLY agree to give us another truck....my dad and I had to unload the Uhaul in the driveway at uhual and relaod the other truck cuz they couldn't find any movers to do it, as their contract states.
They said they would pay us $200 to swap it over....which we had to fight to get upon return of the truck.
After that the next truck was nice it was 3 months old 8.1L with an alison trans...burnt half the fuel and made it to BC....
I AGREE UHAUL IS A JOKE
dozerboy 11-26-2010, 05:20 PM Never had a problem with them but only used them for across town moves. For long hauls I've bought a large enclosed trailer and resold it for what I paid afterwords.
PrivatePilot 12-03-2010, 11:58 PM I rented a flatdeck car hauler from them about 5 years ago. It started with a fight at the desk at how my (at the time, Chevy Astro) was fully capable of towing the trailer with the intended load despite their assurances that it wouldn't. I finally had to print out a record showing the stated tow rating of the Astro for them to allow it after the fact.
It was rather ironic that they were so worried about "Safety" after the remainder of the story.
At pickup I checked the lights. I half expected none of them to work, but was surprised when they all did. Against all common sense (especially as a commercial driver) I failed to check much else..most importantly the brakes.
Drive to point of pickup, about an hour and a half away. Pickup purchased vehicle, load onto trailer. Discover that 2 of four tire hold-downs are broken. Manage to band-aid together to make it safe using my own tools and supplies. Raining cats and dogs. Irritated.
Get onto highway for trip home. First significant traffic slowdown the trailer nearly pushes me into the car in front of me. No brakes!
Pull over to shoulder and checkout the surge brake system. Master cylinder is full of fluid, but when I look at the actual brakes (Discs) it's clear based on the rust that the pads hadn't touched the rotors (in some time) on all but one single brake. The one brake that WAS working was barely doing anything.
I called Uhaul and they advised me that it was my fault for not inspecting the trailer at pickup. They offered to send out a replacement trailer but said it could be "5 to 10 hours" before they would get it to me.
I informed them that I was a commercial driver and would be more then happy to roll their piece of crap scale right into the Milton truck inspection station. They rebutted that I'd be responsible for any tickets since the trailer "was just inspected and certified last month" and any problems must be of my own doing.
Head just about explodes.
Ended up nursing it home as is - smashed on the brakes a few times to free up the seized calipers and did manage to get a little more braking action.
Never dealt with them ever again.
wow..cant believe all the problems ..i am a uhaul dealer and all the trucks here have great power..and get serviced regular...the trailers never have tongue jacks as people just bend them up...but i never have problems like you guys are experiancing..but some dealers just do not give a crap and dont look to have them serviced if theres a problem...so what i am saying is its not uhaul its the crap dealers that have no morals or getup and go...I check all incoming for problems ,,oil and fluids ect.....but thats just me.....if you come here you will get something thats been checked....Jeff
Vege-Taco 01-25-2011, 05:33 PM I've used U-Haul twice. The first time was a 24ish foot truck pulling an auto hauler trailer. The brakes went out on the truck after about 300 miles, leaving us stranded in Amarillo, TX for several hours while the truck was towed and repaired. I didn't have any issues with the trailer though. :D
The second time was an auto dolly. The lighting pigtail was only about 6-inches long, so I had to buy an extension, and once I got it connected, the lights didn't work anyway. I took it back to U-haul to get it repaired and they gave me a second dolly that had a longer pigtail, but it seems the last guy to use it had snipped off the connector. U-Haul soldered on a new connector and we hooked it up to my truck and found that the lights didn't work. We went to check the bulbs and found them missing.
I'm not a fan of U-Haul. :)
mikes06cbr 03-01-2011, 02:31 PM thats why i never let anyone use my trailer, every time i go to use it again something is always wrong with my lights....
Jarasic 03-02-2011, 01:42 PM In 2005 I rented a 26' Uhaul to move from Pentiction BC to Chilliwack BC. I asked for a diesel because I was towing a project 68 c-10 on my flat deck trailer but when I picked it up it was a gasser. Driving the truck home from the Uhaul office I noticed a slight miss in the engine. I got everything loaded and started on my 4.5 hour drive with the trailer in tow. On the slight climb out of Penticton the max speed I could reach was about 60km/hr. Luckily my brother was following in a silverado 1500 and we pulled over once we got on the flat and hooked the trailer to the truck. I called the 1 800 number because the local office was closed and I was told I could only get the Uhaul checked out in Chilliwack (so have a nice trip pretty much). My brother had to drive in front of me because he said the truck was running so rich that the exhaust fumes up hills were making him sick. The #3 Hope/Princeton is a very windy/hilly road and throughout the trip the truck got worse and worse. 8.5 hrs later I arrive in Chilliwack and unload the truck. I drop the truck off the next morning full of fuel and told them about the problems. I told the lady at the chilliwack office that with the engine not running properly I felt I burnt three times the amount of fuel as I should have. The lady came out and checked the mileage and told me I owed extra for the extra km's I put on the truck. I looked on the invoice from when I picked it up and not the odometer said that I had driven 510km's. I told her that could not be correct as the trip from Penticton to Chilliwack is only 310km's plus another 16km's to drive from the Penticton Uhaul office to my old house and from my new house to the Chilliwack office. She told me the odometer tells the story so here is what you owe even though we went on Google Maps and entered the starting and ending addresses exactly 308km's. I pulled out the visa and paid. She then asked if I could drive the truck to a repair shop to have it looked at because she didn't feel comfortable driving such a big truck. I had my brother follow me and we clocked the odo with his truck. His truck showed we drove 6km's to the shop and the Uhaul said we drove 9km's (1.5 x higher). At the shop I had the mechanic come with me to verify. He said he could not believe what he saw and wondered how many other people fell for this scam. He wrote me a letter and I brought it back to Uhaul. I also contacted the 1800 office and emailed them the letter and told them I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau. Three weeks later I recieved a reimbursement cheque for 50% of my total cost and a half a$$ed appology letter as to why the odometer did not read correctly.
I will never use them again and have told many people to steer clear for Uhaul.
jon5212 03-03-2011, 03:40 PM I rented a U-haul a few years ago. Think it was an 18 foot van, I reserved it for 24 hours of use... 29.99 per day. So I get there.. fill out the paperwork and they tell me I have to bring it back in 4 hours.
I kindly told them that 1 day is 24 hours and it is in fact 29.99 per day and I am keeping the truck for 24 hours.
They said well we need it back in 4 hours, I said so are you going to charge me 1/6th of a day then which would be 5 bucks, they said no. I said well tough sh*t you aren't getting it back until tomorrow when I'm done with it and my contract clearly states 24 hours of use.
steakman 03-03-2011, 11:23 PM Amazing arrogance or what eh..?? I would have said EXACTLY the same thing... with a "sucks to be you then dont it" at the end. :D
What an outfit....
Theo
MillwrightJesse 04-07-2011, 05:54 PM I have used them 6 times and never a problem
saratoga 04-28-2011, 12:15 PM Way back in the early 00's the place I was working at built a new office and bought a bunch of furniture from a bank operations center that was being auctioned off.
We needed a truck to get the stuff back to our warehouse, so I went to u haul and got the largest truck they had (24'?). It was an old beat up international with a 4 speed trans IIRC... white smoke and wouldn't go over 45. I literally turned around about three miles down the road and returned it. They gave me a refund since they didn't have any others available.
Went to the penske truck rental place in the industrial part of town, got a relatively new 26' GMC C5500 with a 427 gasser and one of the whiny school bus allisons that would snap your neck every time it shifted and was amazed at the difference. The truck was clean, it handled 5X better and could actually keep up with traffic... only complaint was the governor set at 60.
CRASHNBURN 04-28-2011, 03:52 PM Well..it seemed easy enough, get a small tandem axle trailer and load up all my tools, tool boxes, sports gear, Suitacases for 2, boxes of personal effects and head out west from Ontario.

Man Steak, that really does suck. I hate Uhaul! Surprised they did not try to sell you a cheap one for $30 bucks.. Urgh!!!
Dmax 5th Wheel 05-06-2011, 01:19 AM U hauls r junk. I rented 2 6x12 trailers from them & both sucked.
WV Ridge Runner 05-06-2011, 03:55 PM I must be the exception... I don't use their trucks because they aren't big enough (It takes 2 Penske's to carry all my chit), but I have used their trailers many times without major issues... I've had to fiddle with a wire here and there to make a light work, but what do you expect on a rental trailer?
diesel geezer 05-06-2011, 04:48 PM The last enclosed U-Haul I rented was 2 yrs. ago from a gas station/U-Haul dealer in a small mid-western city. After completing the paper work the lady pointed to the row of trailers and told me to pick one and hook it up. I took the best looking one of the 3 and took it home to pack it. The tires were low on air and I had to play with the wiring to get all the lights to work at the same time. It did make it all the way to Florida without further incident but when I dropped it off at the U-Haul dealer in St. Petersburg, he looked at it and just shook his head.
