I am shopping for some subwoofers and an amp for my '05 crew cab. I think I have decided on an Alpine MRD-M605 amp and the Infinity Perfect 10 subs. I plan on mounting the subs in the subthump under seat box.

However, I was wondering what the difference is between a single voice coil and a dual voice coil sub? Pro's and con's of each?

Thanks!

BTW....anybody in the Indy area want to help me install this system when I get all the parts assembled?? :help:

DVC subs are more versatile than SVC subs. Especially if you want to get maximum power from an amplifier.

You can take 2 4ohm subs and wire them for 8 or 2 ohms.
2 DVC subs you can wire for 1 4 8 ohms respectively.

If your amp is rated as 'stable to a X ohm load' you will want to wire your subs accordingly to get the most power out of your amplifier.

Currently I have 2 Orion NT-12's in a custom enclosure i made for my extended cab. The Reference 644 is rated to deliver 160WRMS bridged mono into a 4 ohm load. Since the amp is stable and rated for 2 or 1 ohm operation (2 ohm 320WRMS), you effectively double your power being sent to the subs since i am running in a 1 ohm configuration.

The cost of running a low impedance load is twofold: The amplifier will run hotter, and you will lose 'dampening' (soundQ) . But you will gain more output (every doubling of wattage produces a 3Db increase in sound.. likewise sound volume is related to piston area ((cone size)) if you can make 12's work; GIT R DONE!) For a given power level 12's have 126.44666515873 square inches of piston area, VS 10's 91.592378181407 sq inches (lateral surface area respectively). If their design is the same NT 10 vs NT 12 or whatever you plan to run the 12's will play louder.
It is all a matter of planning your system.

Real subs are the Isobarically Suspended Eminance 18's I have at home (600 Watts RMS) for my home theater (the other thing no one mentions is efficientcy)... However since my 4 18s would only fit in my bed not in the back seat I think I am gonna go with the perfect 10.1s or JL audio 10s...

I didn't mention efficiency Drew, because then you wouldn't have posted about it....):h
