A good friend of mine has an 01 d-max. The truck was shutting down on him while towing. He was told that there is fuel in the crankcase and that they want to send the injectors out to be tested and to determine which needs to be replaced. He has 138k miles on the clock. My only experience is with my 02 7.3. What do you guys recommend he do, replace all 8? Is an injector bad or are there o-rings like on a 7.3 that could be causing this issue. I have pulled my injectors before and put new o-rings on, but looking at the procedure for the D-max, it seems much more involved. He is getting prices of 300-400 for each injector, plus labor. Any advice?

They can be tested in the truck. If there is fuel in the crankcase it will show on the dip stick and appear to be making oil. Nothing needs to be removed for testing.

Injectors can be had for much less than that. If you go on gmpartsdirect.com you can get all 8 for about 1700 delivered. Also, a gm tech2 or efi live scan of return rates COULD tell you which injector is the culprit, but not always. My advice would be to buy the injectors and follow the do-it-yourself article on this website for injector replacement. It has pictures and isn't as bad as it may seem. Good luck!

It is somewhat involed. You can look in the DIY section and their are a couple write ups on them.
This is just me, but I know alot of guys have had injectors done one or two at a time under warranty. I did not get so lucky and paid for all 8. The reasoning behind that was, everyone knows these injectors like to go out. So why do one or two and have another two go in two months? Especially when it takes so much time and work to replace them.
You can do the bad injectors, but my suggestion would be to do all. Then the spray pattern will match on all, none of the tips will have a possibility of being clogged with carbon, ect... and you won't have to worry about one going out again in the next 10k miles.

How long do these injectors usually last? Why did they need to have the extended warranty? What makes them so problematic? Have they rectified the problem to get them to last longer? I would normally search for all this, but I am really only trying to help a d-max buddy. I spend most of my time on the powerstroke forums. Thanks guys.

The housings crack and the cups leak fuel. It is really a crapshoot on how long they last. The extended warranty is because GM didn't want to actually fix the problem and now a lot of trucks are out of warranty.

Are the new injector redesigned or is this a flaw that will revisit him in another 130k miles?

It'll revisit him. Maybe 130k, maybe 80k, maybe 200k more miles.

The new ones are redesigned but they still fail.

Maybe 30-50,000 mi.

Dang, what a pita. I guess there really is no great "have it all" motor. I know my 7.3 has its issues as well. I guess this is the achilles of the Duramax. Now, it seems like the 1700 price tag is for remaned injectors and they won't honor cracked housings as a viable core. So, it sounds like he has atleast one bad core, right? Thanks guys, I really appreaciate the help.

Its only the Achilles on the LB7. The other generations dont have that severe an issue with injectors.

Have your friend get on here and start reading. He can do some of the simple checks himself.

I have an 01' d'max i bought new. I just replaced the injectors for the first time last week. I have 155K on the clock. I got it done at the stealer and the price was $350 each and then the labor. About $4,800. One year warranty. I'm hoping to go another couple of years with them. I had cheaper bids with remanufactured injectors, and decided to just let the dealer fix it. They do it all the time and the first set lasted 9 years. Tell your buddy if he fixes it, to do all 8 at one time. No since in tearing half the motor off to do just a few of them.
