I am at the tail end of my vacation at OBX and it was great! The new Nittos that I just put on is tearing up the sand....it helps that they are brand new. Sand driving is fun....you just never know if your going to get stuck. I have one rule......"never spit into the wind", ie. never make fun of someone who is in a bad position.:p:

Some pics...

In the first picture that is the driveway the house....it is truely the ultimate driveway, just like the one in the Jeep commercial.

Also, under the house is my brother-in-laws brand new Range Rover 3000 miles on her. That truck is SICK! It have more switches and knobs than the jets I once flew. And to top it off....the suspension goes up and down, depending on what you need. I already knew the Rovers did that, but to see it first hand.

Its not possible to get stuck if you air your tires down (about 20-25psi). Can go most places in 2wd until you stop then you need 4 to get moving again. doesnt look like youve got them aired down, youre much braver than i am. you work the truck a lot harder without the aired down too.

I have the rear at 28psi and the front at 32. In some spots the sand is really deep with tracks going all over, that is were it gets a little rough.

We've been down the last two years, stayed in a house on the beach in Kitty Hawk. Bought both my trucks down there at Victory Chevrolet. Did you see my old Sport Trac, green with 35's. Was still around this spring, sitting at the Duck fire department.I'm not allowed to go back,I can't afford another truck payment.I would like to go back next summer and do some more fishing.

No, did not see green Sport Trac. You have to be tied to the passenger seat until you pass dealership.

We drove through WV this year, first time for me on the ground. WOW! That is the way we are always going from now on.

When we went down the last time they had a new GTO in the show room, unsold and silver to boot,I really had to think about it.:D

Diesel Man, GREAT looking truck! I would love to make my truck look like that. Do you airdown that much with those tires in the pic?

I have a question, has anyone ever installed a compressor on there truck? A friend for mine in college installed a A/C compressor and ran air off it. Any kits that would work? This will save time at the hose.

Diesel man, is the air set up something that you made or did you get it as kit?

Thanks

Something That Was Installed As A Kit . Its Used To Run My Air Bags When I Tow . I Have A Gage Under The Dash With A Fill And Release Button For Air . Underneath The Truck Is The Compressor With Lines Running To The Air Bags . There Is A Hook Up On The Compressor For Air Tolls But I Have Not Used It .

Gotcha, I would have to hook-up a tank with a pressure cute-off switch if I am not running with bags.

Yeah man, OBX does rock! Kinda nice just lounging around down there with nothing to do.

Great looking trucks on this thread too. I was just going to say that I air down to 12psi when I had my factory 245's and my 285's now. I was digging in too much at 18psi. The sand must just be softer in some places.

OBX was different from DE because they don't have compressors at the beach accesses. Most Gas stations did, but sometimes it was kinda scary driving on pavement with such a low psi. My new solution is to go with a CO2 tank something like powertank, but homemade. I've got a 20lb bottle and the fittings so far, just gotta get the regulator. The bottle was $50 deposit and $20 for the fill. The air lines and fittings are cheap, and the regulator is $40 plus shipping. One 20lb bottle should fill up about 16 decent sized tires. Just an idear to throw out there.

I too went to OBX this year. Took the kids out fishing on the GradyWhite. Caught sharks too. Stay at MM 14 or so at a small little hotel with boat parking. This was my first trip to OBX and I will go back again. Lotsa fun and the beach driving is cool. Just gotta air out the tires...the duallies can be tough if the valve stems are not lined up right. I went out onto the beach at Oregon Inlet and when you leave the beach across the road in the state park is a place to put air back in your tires. They have a donation fund to keep the aircompressors going.

I can never get enough.....next year we are going for two weeks.

We are hoping to be living closer next year.....and not having a 16 hour drive. Trying to move North Carolina. Just have to see.

I am also starting my project.....installing a mechanical air compressor that will use a old A/C compressor. A friend of mine in college did this for the beach. I have all winter to work on it. :)

The york compressor rigged up to be driven off the engine is about as good as you can get for on board air, however, if you decide you want to get a kit I'd try here http://www.oasisoffroad.com/products.html. They're a little pricey, but, as far as electrical compressors go, they're the best

I have been trying to move back for a while now, I am now in Atlanta, but from just outside of Wilmington, NC. Some of the prettiest beaches in the world. I hope you can do it...:)

You are correct about the prettiest beaches, I think it NC is the prettiest state in the Union. It has the most to offer.

We are still trying.:( Just drove throught NC up 85 to VA then 85 to 40 out to TN, it took everything thing I had to keep from going to OBX.:p:

I am in the process of modifying the stock A/C pump on my CJ-7 to use for onboard air. A York belt driven is the way to go, it'll put out alot more air than the electrics as well as the fact that it's generally worry free.

I have to install an inline oiler on the intake side of my pump because the A/C pumps that came stock were lubricated by the freon. Then put a filter on the output to take the oil out of the air system before it hits the tank, to prevent filling my tires up with a bunch of oil spray. I am going to have a 3/4" quick detatch at both bumpers and a pressure gauge and regulator under the hood, with a toggle switch to turn the system on. I am not going to bother with a pressure switch, the high pressure popoff valves will do fine for what I need. It'll just sound like an air brake system venting...

SpoolinTurbo, that is what I am wanting to do with my truck. Do you know of a good filter that will seperate the oil from the air? I think everything else will be easy.

I love the outerbanks grew up about a hour from there but now live 6 hours away, went this past summer and you guys with the big trucks be careful in the sand, real easy to sink and get stuck. Took the Z-71 Suburban out there and did great, I did have to pull a ford F-350dually 4x4 out of the sand with the burban!!

Beautiful spot. With regard to airing down the tires, it depends on your tires and the weight of your rig. Air 'em down until they bulge at the bottom. I've got 44" **** Cepeks on my truck. I run 20 psi on the highway and 5 lbs off road (helps cushion the ride too).

SpoolinTurbo, how is the project going?

Do you mind passing some of the info along....like what parts you used and any info that might help me out.

Thanks man.

I ended up totaling that truck. i still have a couple of those yourks laying around. im going to put one where the 2nd alt. goes once i get the serp belt clutch for it.
