When I change my Allison spin on, how much fluid will I need to replace for the filter fluid loss? I have 1500 miles....should I start synthetic this early on?

Thanks!

When I changed my spin on, I just filled the filter with fluid and put it on. As far as synthetic fluids, it is all on personal preference. I am getting ready to swap over to synthetic with 26,000 miles on it.

I've done the spin-on twice. Just filled the new filter with fluid. Have yet to need to add any afterwards.

Enough will spill out that you'll want a pan though.

ditto. Dont forget about the magnet! wipe the mag clean and place it on the new filter and then fill the filter up.

Using synthetic is a personal choice. Synthetic cost a LOT more. I kept the OEM stuff in till I was ready for a fluid change then switched over to synthetic(Amsoil torque drive). Syntentic takes the heat much better, last longer and won't deteriate especially when towing heavy. If you don't tow or drive it hard and budget is a consideration, stick with the OEM.

The proper synthetic fluid will give you 20 % more holding power on your clutches and do a whole lot more for your Ally.

OK, which synthetic fluid will give me 20% more holding power? My tranny is stock, but other things aren't.

TranSynd, QuatrSyn,. not sure about Amsoil Torque Shift, or the new Mobil fluid.

Mike:

Where are you getting QuatraSyn from and for how much? Transyn (Allison stuff) seems awfully expensive, but if I get more holding power and longer drain intervals, I guess it would be worth it. I am changing the Dexron III at 25K intervals.

Find your local Citgo dealer. Mobils new fluid might be the sleeper here that kicks all their a$$es. I need to find some and report.

I change the spin-on filter and drain 8 quarts of oil in the pan and put in 8 new quarts every 5,000 miles. I tow over mountains a lot. For the price of syn oil, I figure I can put in 8 fresh quarts of dino every 5,000 miles.

I like that solution. I think I will do a complete change and then start doing this. The cheveron ATF at Costco is CHEAP!

Thanks for the info. I'll hold off a bit until I see your report on the Mobil fluid.

I wasn't thinking when I did mine with the tranny hot. Lost about half a quart I guess after I filled up the filter and replaced the magnet. Fluid was spilling out after I unspun it a little and stopped caused it was hot. Next time I'll get the stuff and let the truck cool.

So, do spin on filters really cost $20 or did I just get ripped off??

No they don't and yes, badly.

The stock pan holds how many quarts?

96dragshee:

About 7 quarts after a drain and filter change.

Jimbo-
They can be had for less than $10 at Allison dealers like Stewart & Stevenson. Also some of the vendors on the board sell them much cheaper than $20...

I will attempt to change the spin on filter for the first time shortly. From what I have read I guess I should not expect a lot of trans fluid to get out unless the fluid is hot. I should have a quart of OEM fluid on standby to fill the new filter. My truck will have approx 1500 miles on it when I change the spin on. When should I change it again after that? Should I just change it when I change my motor oil and filter every 3000 to 4000 miles?

I plan on changing out the trans fluid every 25k miles per the owners manual (severe duty) and replace with the Allison branded fluid if that is considered to be the best(transynd?).

Am I forgeting something regarding the replacement of the spin on filter? Thanks

Scott, here is what I am thinking-

5,000 engine oil & filter
10,000 alli spin-on, fuel filter, air filter
20,000 alli pan fluid change to transynd
40,000 alli internal filter

Seems like a good routine, maybe a little over kill for some people.

Well having done my first filter/fluid change-out a while back (and having read quite a bit on this site b4 that)....

Some will recommend, Scott, since you have a 4x4 and maybe the LSD in the rear, that you change that fluid in the 500 - 1000 mile range. I did mine at 1K and it was not only underfilled but very filthy. refilled with Mobil 1 75W 90.

I did my engine oil and filter at the same 1K miles. Used a Mobil 1 filter (which some consider the best) and Delo 15w 40 bought at the local Costco (the oil, not the filter).

Also did the Trans filter (more on-topic to this thread) and found out the hard way NOT to change it hot.

Don't forget the magnet on the Ally filter goes to the new one!

Enjoy your new truck! we love ours.....

Noticed everyone is filling the new spin on trans filter with oil. Stewart & Stevenson does not do that due to the very small amount of oil it contains. Any thoughts?

I change mine every 6K miles............on a cold tranny..........just spin it off..........spin a new one on and add 1 PT. of fluid.........

No mess...........and don't forget the magnet..........

I usually hit it every other oil change............this way I remember when it's due........

I use WIX oil/tranny/fuel filters...............they are good quality and inexpensive with free shipping.

I was referring to the spin-on filters for the Allison. Several folks were talking about filling the new transmission filter with transmission fluid before installing it & I was mentioning that Stewart & Stevenson, an Allison shop in Sacramento, CA, did not do that due to the small amount of fluid lost when removing the old filter.
